Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is not backing down on his initiative to make open borders Democrats feel the pain of the policies they support. In April, he, along with Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, began bussing asylum seekers and illegal immigrants apprehended at the southern border to Washington, D.C. and New York.
But now, it appears the governor plans to expand the operation. During a Tuesday appearance with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Abbott vowed to keep sending migrants to northern cities “until the Biden administration does its job to enforce the laws concerning the border.” He then said that the Lone Star State is “looking at other cities to send them to.”
The governor said:
“[W]e have more buses headed their way as we speak right now. But, Sean, this just shows the hypocrisy of these liberal leaders up in the northeast who think, well, that border crisis created by Joe Biden, that’s fine as long as it’s Texas that has to deal with it, but as soon as they have to deal with the real consequences of Biden’s border…crisis, they’re up in arms calling for the National Guard, as you point out, dealing with just a tiny fraction of what we have to deal with every single day. We’re going to keep sending those buses up there until they fully understand and most importantly, Sean, until the Biden administration does its job to enforce the laws concerning the border.”
He continued:
“We are helping out these small local communities by sending even more buses to these communities and putting these new migrants on the buses and sending them to Washington, DC. And we’re looking at other cities to send them to.”
So far, Texas has sent over 5,200 migrants to northern cities, while Arizona has sent 1,000. Abbott recently sent letters to the mayors of DC and New York City inviting them to come to the southern border to better understand the situation. Both mayors have requested assistance from the federal government to deal with the influx of migrants. Recently, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser requested help from the National Guard and referred to the situation as a “humanitarian crisis.”
Bowser has criticized Abbott’s actions, calling them “obviously politically motivated.”
New York City Mayor Eric Adams also requested federal assistance. However, his situation is slightly different because he has to deal with the city’s “right to shelter” mandate, which requires that the city provide any asylum seeker with access to a bed. Perhaps he will also be calling the National Guard soon?
Abbott began bussing migrants when it became apparent that the Biden administration was unable – or unwilling – to handle the migrant crisis, which disproportionately affects Americans living in border states.
“As Governor of a southern border state, I have watched illegal crossings hit record highs over and over again since President Biden took office,” Abbott wrote in his letter to the two mayors. “President Biden’s reckless open border policies have created a dangerous environment not only for tens of millions of Texans, but for communities all across the nation, including yours.”
Then he issued the challenge: Come down to the border and see what is happening. “I invite you to visit our border region to see firsthand the dire situation that only grows more urgent with each passing day, and to meet with the local officials, who like yourselves, realize this matter deserves immediate federal action,” Abbott wrote. “I also ask you to join me in requesting President Biden secure the border and put an end to this disastrous crisis.”
Gov. Abbott is playing this situation masterfully, which explains why Democrats are so upset. For starters, transporting migrants to blue cities is the best way to get people to understand why the situation at the border is so severe. These people are insulated from the consequences of the policies they support – and it’s high time they get to see it up close and personal. Besides, if they are so concerned with the plight of the migrants trying to gain entry into the United States, they should have no problem taking care of them, right?
Even more, bussing migrants to blue cities brings more attention to the issue. Let’s face it, Abbott’s move was at least partially a plot to get people’s attention. He knew Democrats and their comrades in the activist media would react in their typical hysterical fashion. Their caterwauling only puts the issue in front of more eyes and ears which makes people question why the governor is doing this in the first place.
The situation also further highlights the Biden administration’s refusal to take the migrant crisis seriously. As Abbott said, since the White House won’t deal with the problem, Texas and Arizona must step up. The reality is that they would not have to make these moves if President Joe Biden actually wanted to stem the flow of migrants to the southern border instead of rolling out the red carpet. Governors stepping up to do the president’s job is not a good look for the White House.
Lastly, it also exposes the “Not In My Backyard” attitude on the left, who pretends to care about these folks. The fact that Democrats and members of the activist media are even complaining about the matter shows they do not care as much as they would have us believe. Indeed, the fact that they are just fine pushing these policies as long as they only impact red states is telling. If they want more migrants to enter the country, they should be willing to foot the bill.
I’m surprised Democrats haven’t lodged legal challenges against Texas and Arizona yet – but they are probably forthcoming. However, this is a messaging war that they can’t possibly win. The optics are not in their favor on this one.
