At a Tuesday campaign stop, Democratic Texas gubernatorial candidate Robert Francis O’Rourke, an Irishman who goes by “Beto” to pretend he’s Latino, made a quick snack out of his own foot when addressing the situation at the southern border. The nominee excoriated Gov. Greg Abbott’s decision to deploy National Guard troops at the border to stem the flow of illegal immigrants into the U.S. as “a solution in search of a problem.”

Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke told supporters at a campaign stop in College Station that the decision to deploy guardsmen under Operation Lone Star is a “solution in search of a problem.” His comments come after more than 2 million migrants crossed the border illegally into the United States under President Joe Biden’s first year in office — more than one million in Texas alone.

“There are [National] Guard members from Texas A&M who are on the border right now in Zapata, in Webb, in Hidalgo Counties to go be part of a solution in search of a problem,” O’Rourke told people attending the campaign stop.

Abbott spokesman Mark Miner clapped back at the failed presidential and Senate candidate. “Beto O’Rourke needs to tell the more 1,000 Texas families who lost loved ones due to fentanyl that our southern border isn’t a problem,” he said.

Last year, over 100,000 Americans nationwide lost their lives to drug overdoses, the highest number in recent memory. About 60 percent of these deaths were caused by fentanyl, which has been flowing over the southern border in large part due to President Joe Biden’s migrant crisis.

Only hours after taking office, the president began reversing most of former President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. What followed was the beginning of the worst migrant crisis America has experienced in its history, as hundreds of thousands of people made their way across the southern border.

Mexican drug cartels seized on the opportunity to push more illicit substances into the country. Authorities have seized record levels of heroin, marijuana, and other drugs, much of which had been laced with fentanyl, which has proven to be particularly deadly.

In 2021, Abbott launched Operation Lone Star, which sent thousands of Texas National Guard soldiers and more than 1,000 Department of Public Safety officers to the border to assist in stopping the flow of illegals into the country. This move led to over 105,000 migrant encounters, and significant numbers of drug and weapons seizures according to Breitbart Texas.

Of course, Beto is attempting to play to his audience’s ignorance. The activist media has largely ignored the problems at the border, especially in recent months. Indeed, when the crisis first emerged, there was at least some reporting detailing the lack of transparency coming from the White House and the plight of unaccompanied minors languishing in detention centers. But now, with the midterm elections creeping ever closer, it appears our vaunted Fourth Estate has mostly forgotten about the matter, which is still ongoing.

Unfortunately for the Irishman, people in Texas remain well aware of what is happening at the border, so it is not likely they will smell what he’s cooking. O’Rourke has already proven to be out of touch with Texans, especially when it comes to the Second Amendment. He recently backed down from his radical anti-gun stance and indicated he no longer wishes to seize AR-15 rifles. However, it appears he has not yet learned his lesson on immigration. This, along with the fact that he’s not quite as popular as Democrats would have us believe, will contribute to his ignominious defeat in November.
