House Rep. James Clyburn acknowledged that gun control legislation he recently introduced is only the “first step” in the Democrats anti-gun agenda. Despite always claiming they don’t want to come for people’s guns, they continue to promote policies designed to make firearm ownership more difficult. Now, instead of trying to obfuscate their obvious intentions, some are outright bragging about their plans for the Second Amendment.

Clyburn recently introduced legislation that, if passed, would extend the maximum amount of time it takes to undergo an instant background check when purchasing a firearm. Currently, background checks are allowed to take up to three business days. Under the lawmaker’s bill, the time limit would extend to at least 10 days.

During an interview with NPR, Clyburn discussed his recent proposal and indicated that there would be more to come. He argued that extending the time frame for background checks “is a good first step.” He then pivoted to discussing universal background checks.

“A large majority of Americans, including gun owners, support universal background checks,” Clyburn said. “This legislation is needed to keep weapons out of the hands of those who should not have them and save lives.”

The anti-gun lobby has become more animated now that Democrats control both chambers of Congress and the presidency. Over the next two years leading up to the 2022 midterms, they plan to ram through as much anti-Second Amendment legislation as possible. As with President Biden’s immigration agenda, the makeup of the Senate will likely make it difficult to pass extreme measures, but this does not indicate that they will not vigorously pursue their objectives.

Democrats and activist media outlets have constantly beat the gun control drum, claiming that stricter measures regarding firearm ownership would decrease gun crime and prevent mass shootings. But what they don’t acknowledge is the fact that the overwhelming majority of gun crimes are committed using illegally-obtained weapons. The gun control lobby is fully aware of this reality, but continue to try to erect more obstacles between law-abiding Americans and gun ownership.

President Joe Biden, during the 2020 campaign, repeatedly promised to pursue a decidedly anti-gun approach. He insisted that his administration would pursue a ban on so-called “assault weapons” and “high-capacity magazines” ostensibly to protect Americans from gun violence. The president also plans to “eliminate immunity for gun manufacturers who knowingly put weapons of war on our streets.”

As with his comrades, he claims these measures “will take action to end our epidemic of gun violence and make our schools and communities safer.”

But the reality is that making it more difficult for law-abiding Americans to obtain guns will only ensure that those who obtain them illegally will be armed. This initiative is not about making Americans safer, it will only make government more powerful, which is the entire motivation behind their push to curtail legal gun ownership.
