It looks like the Democrats still haven’t figured out that comparing their political opposition to Nazis isn’t exactly the most effective persuasion strategy. Former Vice President Joe Biden joined his close friends and allies in the corporate press in adding yet another Nazi-themed attack to their arsenal.
During an interview on MSNBC, Biden claimed that Trump is similar to Josef Goebbels, who led Nazi Germany’s propaganda apparatus. “He’s sort of like Goebbels,” he said. “You say the lie long enough, keep repeating it, repeating it, repeating it, it becomes common knowledge.”
Of course, this wouldn’t be a story about Biden if he didn’t completely mess up the quote. The remark to which he is referring is this: “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.”
But we can give Uncle Joe points for trying.
When the former Vice President used that mutilated quote, he was responding to a question from host Stephanie Ruhle, who pointed to Trump’s allegations that Biden is a socialist. “One of the things he says over and over is that you will push a socialist agenda,” Ruhle said.
Then, as any objective journalist would do, Ruhle offered a defense of the Democratic presidential candidate. “You’ve said it very clearly, you are not a socialist. And you actually have a record to prove that you’re not. But what the President does, he says you are, he says it twice as often and twice as loud,” she said. “How do you combat that lie when he keeps pushing it, and some voters start to believe it?”
Of course, Ruhle didn’t think it necessary to question Biden’s Nazi comparison. Perhaps this is because many of her colleagues at MSNBC have also attempted to link Trump to Hitler’s regime. Both Joe Scarborough and Anchor Joy Reid have pretended that there are valid similarities between the President and Adolph Hitler.
It’s almost like these people want Trump to be re-elected. They seem to forget that baseless accusations of being like Nazis and other brutal authoritarians are one of the reasons why the right elected Trump. Their brazen exaggerations led to their defeat in 2016, and it is incredible that they believe the same thing can’t happen in 2020. But they have to throw that red meat to their audience every now and again, don’t they?
