On February 10, the House Ways and Means Committee held a hearing titled “Foreign Influence in American Non-Profits: Unmasking Threats from Beijing and Beyond.” The hearing examined how America’s adversaries funnel money into U.S.-based nonprofit networks to promote anti-U.S. messages and sow chaos and violence across the country.
The State Department shared with the committee a report on “Countering Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference.” The document singled out Code Pink and The People’s Forum, among other nonprofits, that are part of the notorious Singham Network — a group of far-left organizations that are funded by China-based billionaire Neville Roy Singham. Singham has close ties to the Chinese government and is the husband of Jodie Evans, former Democrat operative and co-founder of Code Pink.
The report hit a nerve with Code Pink. Medea Benjamin, co-founder of Code Pink, posted the video below days after the hearing. It’s the usual deny and deflect tactic from her.
The U.S. State Department is openly attacking peace groups like CODEPINK and The People’s Forum, smearing us as “foreign agents” and even “narco-terrorist sympathizers.” Why? Because we oppose war, ICE raids, sanctions, and endless militarism.

This State Department report is a major step in the right direction. It’s long overdue. It serves as official recognition by the U.S. government of the role that Code Pink and other Singham Network organizations play in China’s political warfare against the U.S. — a component of Beijing’s unrestricted warfare strategy. But what happens next to these organizations, the steps the federal government takes to address this issue, will matter immensely.
The report notes that Code Pink’s “China Is Not Our Enemy” campaign is dedicated to spreading Chinese Communist Party (CCP) propaganda. The group organizes trips to China and hosts webinars that feature prominent CCP propagandists.
The People’s Forum also acts as a mouthpiece of the CCP. It’s on record for glorifying the Chinese Revolution and working with the Qiao Collective — a self-proclaimed “diaspora Chinese media collective” that, in reality, promotes perspectives sympathetic to Chinese socialism. The People’s Forum regularly offers courses on revolutionary history and organizing.
Another organization worth paying attention to is the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) — the focus of a February 2026 Network Contagion Research Institute report presented before the committee. The DSA coordinates riots with Singham Network organizations, such as the ANSWER Coalition and the Party for Socialism and Liberation. Alicia Singham Goodwin, Singham’s niece, is a top DSA leader in New York City.
As I reported in November of last year, the CCP infiltrated the American political system via the DSA and affiliated Singham nonprofits to elect Zohran Mamdani as New York City’s mayor. DSA-backed candidates, running as Democrats in partisan races, have also been elected to city councils and school boards across the country. Beijing is increasingly targeting less publicized state and local elections.

What comes next is crucial. An aggressive issue is deserving of an aggressive response. At some point, endless congressional investigations and white papers need to materialize into action.
These foreign-backed organizations posing as nonprofits are focused on one thing: subverting America. It’s no coincidence that the DSA platform explicitly links capitalism to violence or that DSA chapters strongly support eliminating private property, jails, and borders.
Elected officials and research organizations have recommended launching Foreign Agents Registration Act compliance investigations into these organizations and stripping them of their tax-exempt status. These measures are necessary, but given the scale of the problem at hand, they’ll prove to be inadequate in the long run.
Our elected officials will have to confront the question of whether adversary-backed organizations that seek to overturn the American system, using any means necessary, should be allowed to function at all in this country. If an organization has ties to domestic and foreign terrorist groups, as is the case with the DSA, what does that make the organization?
The burden also falls on the administration to respond effectively and aggressively. While members of Congress have expressed concerns regarding Chinese and other foreign infiltration, they have not been able to pass meaningful legislation relating to transnational repression or foreign purchases of American land, for example.
The administration must unilaterally resurrect the Department of Justice’s China Initiative, expanding its focus to include everything from academic and industrial espionage to the activities of Chinese hometown organizations — oft-overlooked CCP front groups that have documented ties to triads — and other nonprofits. In early January, Congress kowtowed to Chinese special interests by quietly abandoning plans to reinstate the China Initiative.
And perhaps several additional domestic terrorist organization designations, with enforcement, are warranted.
This State Department clearly understands the threat the CCP poses to U.S. national security. According to FBI Director Kash Patel, there’s been a 40 percent increase in Chinese spy arrests under this administration, which is a remarkable development. But to dismantle foreign influence campaigns and far-left networks on U.S. soil, it’s going to take a lot more.
