Ken Buck has the grassroots in his corner. It’s readily apparent across the state. Consequently, Jane Norton is going to bypass the Republican Assembly this weekend and try to collect signatures to get on the ballot. But make no mistake about it, to change the narrative about Norton bypassing the grassroots, she is vying to get a Palin endorsement late this week.I’m sure Governor Palin does not realize what is going on, given that many of us looking at Colorado had to have explained to us the intricacies and timing of the Republican Assembly, but it is this weekend, Jane Norton is skipping it, and her campaign is, I’m told by multiple people including reporters in Colorado, setting Governor Palin up for a very awkward moment — an event designed to put the spotlight on Jane Norton competing with an event designed to showcase the Republican grassroots in Colorado.Hopefully this is all much ado about nothing and Governor Palin will, at best, join Senator Jim DeMint and me in supporting Ken Buck. Somewhere along the way someone forgot one of the chief rules of politics: win the general election.We have been so focused on primaries, we’re forgetting that the endgame is victory in November not [insert your primary date here]. I remember in one of the campaign books James Carville and Paul Begala wrote that was actually very good (complete with a great pancake recipe), they wrote that winning the general election was what matters, not the primary. They advised positioning yourself in such a way that you could win the primary without then having to bail on everything to win the general election.Well, we need to consider that advice this morning because Chuck DeVore outperforms Carly Fiorina against Barbara Boxer.Please click here for the rest of the post.

I’ve gotten a lot of emails in the past few days about the Mason-Dixon poll showing Sharon Angle ahead of Danny Tarkanian in Nevada. Everyone wants my thought on it. Well, since you asked.I like Sharon Angle. I like her a lot. We backed Sharon Angle in her congressional race. I did a podcast with her. She is one of us.But, I also think that Ms. Angle has a tendency when the spotlight is on her to not deploy, as Austin Powers might say, an inner monologue on what to say and not say as the heat is on. My great concern is that while she is a true winger who I would love to see in federal office, she would, during the general election campaign, say something more perplexing than Sue Lowden’s bartergate comment, then dig in.Please click here for the rest of the post.

You know, when Heinz ketchup became (bizarrely enough) a minor issue during the 2004 campaign I sneered wholeheartedly at the idea of switching brands just because the stuff was tenuously maybe-linked to the Democrats. Politics was one thing; my freaking ketchup was quite another. So I feel that I am in a position to fulminate about the fact that Heinz is about to cut the salt content of their ketchup in order to satisfy the ninnies at Bloomberg’s National Salt Reduction Initiative.Please click here for the rest of the post.
