Unity Is a Wonderful Ideal, but as Democrats Veer Further to the Left, It Is Impossible

Actor Dean Cain appeared on Fox and Friends on Saturday to weigh in on a petition to “Defund the Police” which many Hollywood celebrities including Lizzo, John Legend, and Jane Fonda had signed. Cain, a conservative, pointed out the sheer hypocrisy of a group that hires former police officers to provide security for themselves.

This comes on the heels of LA Mayor Eric Garcetti’s announcement that he was canceling the planned increase to the LAPD budget. Additionally, he was looking to cut their current budget by $150 million.

America has seen over the last two weeks what happens when there is little-to-no police presence. Mayhem has spread from one U.S. city to another in the two weeks since the horrifying death of George Floyd while in police custody sent shockwaves throughout the country. Democratic politicians and their cheerleaders, the mainstream media, have not only condoned the violence, but encouraged it.

Defunding the police is only the latest stupid idea to come from the left. Consider several other radical policy changes proposed by Democrats in recent memory: The Green New Deal, abolishing ICE, open borders, the payment of reparations for slavery, and a continuation of the lockdowns until a vaccine for COVID-19 is developed (unless, of course, something comes along which they must protest).

Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors was interviewed on ABC News’ “Nightline”  last week. She said that the group is demanding accountability. She told ABC:

They want to see the arrest of all the officers involved [in the death of George Floyd]. They want to have no more terror, no more police terror in their communities.

Everybody wants to be apologized to. Everybody wants to be told, ‘I’m sorry. What I did was wrong. It was unacceptable. We won’t do it again and, in fact, this is how we change.’

There was unanimous condemnation for the actions of Derek Chauvin and his fellow officers. In fact, it was the only time all Americans were on the same page on any issue. On Thursday, following the results of a second independent autopsy, Chauvin’s charges were upgraded to second degree murder and the three other former police officers were arrested.

Derek Chauvin killed George Floyd. The rest of us had nothing to do with it. It was an abomination, but holding all white Americans responsible for the hideous act of one depraved individual is irrational and unjustified.

Brendan O’Neill, the editor of Spiked, published an op-ed last week entitled “I Did Not Kill George Floyd.”  He wrote, “whiteness has become a kind of original sin, an inherited moral defect one must atone for throughout one’s life.”

O’Neill cited a quote from a Time Magazine contributor which said, “White people have inherited this house of white supremacy, built by their forebears and willed to them.”

The Chicago Tribune tells readers, “White America, if you want to know who’s responsible for racism, look in the mirror. White people, you are the problem.”

“Let’s be clear about what is happening here: this is an effort to establish racial collective guilt for the murderous suffocation of George Floyd,” says O’Neill.

Is this not racist in and of itself?

Finally, Cullors says, “we need to defund police and we need to take those resources and put them back into our communities so that we have access to healthy food, we have access to adequate health care, we have access to adequate public health system.”

Defunding the police because of Chauvin’s actions is about as logical as “cutting funding for a hospital or a school where a doctor or teacher has engaged in criminal conduct against a patient or student,” Curtis Hill, Indiana’s Attorney General argued in a recent op-ed.

Unity, to the left, means that the right should support these radical ideas. And because President Trump, most Republicans, and a large proportion of independents, refuse to sign on to these destructive programs, we are divisive and intolerant in their eyes.

I will never, nor would the majority of Americans, unite with a movement that says we must defund the police.

Fox News’ contributor Mollie Hemingway discussed the issue of “national unity” with her colleague Brian Kilmeade on Thursday. Here’s what she had to say:

Well, I think the issue is that when people see unity, they seem to think unity with leftist messages. And, a lot of people are saying, ‘We don’t want unity with leftist messages. We want someone willing to fight those leftist messages.’ Even if the media and social media and corporations and everybody sort of in a position of influence [are] fighting to make people join with those groups.

You know, there are mobs out there saying ‘ you must bow down and be unified.’ A lot of people are saying, ‘I don’t want to be unified. I don’t think the country is irredeemably evil. I actually believe in the founding principles. I believe in equal justice under the law and individual liberty and individual responsibility.’

And so, when people say ‘Oh, but he’s not a uniter.’ A lot of people say, ‘Thank God he’s not a uniter. Thank God he’s willing to highlight what needs to be fought for.’ And, that is not a message you get from a lot of people in the media who just sort of say, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah. He should be a uniter. Well, unity is nice but you need to be united on the right principles. And, you need to fight for those principles.’

The left has wandered so far from the reservation, particularly since the midterms, that agreement has become inconceivable.

In the end, this conflict, which is ostensibly about race, is much more about a power grab. The left is lying to the American people. This isn’t about George Floyd and everyone knows that. His death was an excuse for them to make yet another desperate attempt to prevent Trump’s reelection in November. The Russian collusion hoax, the “quid pro quo” with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zellensky hoax, and even a plague which forced President Trump to lose his best argument for reelection — the once robust economy — have all failed.  This is just one more desperate attempt to destroy him.

What will the left do if Trump wins in November? America will be set on fire.
