As my colleague Susie Moore reported earlier, the Supreme Court overruled both the Casey and Roe decisions on Friday morning in a 6-3 vote.

Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis celebrated the Supreme Court’s decision to send the issue of abortion back to the states on Friday afternoon.

“The prayers of millions have been answered,” he said in a statement released via Twitter. It continued:

“For nearly fifty years, the U.S. Supreme Court has prohibited virtually any meaningful pro-life protection, but this was not grounded in the text, history or structure of the Constitution.

By properly interpreting the Constitution, the Dobbs majority has restored the people’s role in our republic and a sense of hope that every life counts.”

He also explained his plan for the state to increase restrictions on abortion and promote alternatives for expectant and new mothers, such as adoption.

“Florida will continue to defend its recently-enacted pro-life reforms against state court challenges, will work to expand pro-life protections, and will stand for life by promoting adoption, foster care and child welfare.”

Abortion is currently legal in Florida up to 24 weeks unless the woman’s life is in danger; however, DeSantis signed a bill in April that will restrict abortions to 15 weeks unless there is a physical danger to the mother or “fatal fetal anomalies”, according to The Washington Post.

Now that abortion is a state’s issue once again, these legal battles will likely rage on in the coming weeks and months, although it is unclear how successful the challenges to state abortion laws will be overall.
