As we reported yesterday, House Republicans were working to prepare a compromise immigration bill for a vote next week alongside an existing bill favored by Conservative members of the House and sponsored by Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte of Virginia.

According to the Washington Post House Republican leaders circulated a draft of the measure late Thursday and planned to gauge support on Friday. Votes on both proposals are scheduled for next week. The Post refers to the Goodlatte proposal as “a hardline bill” and the draft measure circulated last night as “a compromise between the moderate and conservative factions of the GOP conference.”

The Post Reports that during his interview on “Fox and Friends.” President Trump indicated he would not sign the compromise bill:

I’m looking at both of them. I certainly wouldn’t sign the more moderate one.

House Republican leaders had been working closely with Trump administration officials to ensure it was something the president would sign.

Trump’s opposition is significant because Members of the House Conservative Republican Study Committee told senior White House adviser Stephen Miller they need an explicit tweet from President Donald J. Trump before they will vote for immigration legislation providing amnesty for illegal aliens.
