Being a Texan since birth, the Spanish language has been an integral part of my upbringing. While I've learned more than a few words of it, I was never required to know it to get by in this state. It helps, since Mexican culture is so heavily influential in Texas culture, but it's not necessary.
And that's the way it should be in America. Yeah, we're a multi-cultural country by design, but as I wrote yesterday, there's an underlying kind of civic habit you should adopt when you come here that goes beyond wherever you came from. I think language should be like that, too.

Recently, the streamer Asmongold went on a rant that made leftists incredibly angry. He said that it should be an absolute requirement to learn English, seeing as how everything in America is English, from stop signs to the Constitution. It's all in English, and even without Trump declaring it the official language of the U.S. back in March, the fact that this is primarily an English-speaking country is self-evident.
Even in places where there's heavy cultural influence, most of the writing in the area is still in English. Even international trade is primarily done in English.

It's only logical to make people who come here learn English, and I never understood the Left thinking it's somehow racist for that to happen. In fact, if leftists truly cared about immigrants, they'd strongly encourage learning the English language.
According to a 2003 study from the Department of Economics at the University of Houston, the economic benefits of migrants learning English can't be denied:
Compared to a person who speaks English poorly, a person who speaks English well (xija = 2) earns 33 percent more and a person who speaks English very well earns 67 percent more.
If you want to give an immigrant who came to this country to work hard an opportunity make a name for themselves, then the first rung on the ladder would be "learn English." It's not just the standard in American linguistics; it's literally the trade language. Buying, selling, services, and contracts are all done in English. Our legal system that oversees these contracts is done in English.
According to an article in the New York Times back in March, when Trump made it official, trying to cement English as the lingua franca is "jingoistic":
The English language is under not the slightest threat in America, and providing services in other languages for adults past the critical period is kindness, not disloyalty. A punitive yawp that English be “official” in this country is jingoistic trash talk in the guise of statesmanship.
Is the NYT wrong? Not all the way. Jingoism means that the belief that the ways and means of their country are so superior to others that others should conform to it, to which I'd have to say... well... yeah. This is the most advanced, richest, and technologically superior nation on the planet. It's not excessively patriotic to demand people learn how to communicate in this country properly. It's looking out for them and inviting them to take part in the greatest experiment to ever exist on the planet.
But anything that is pro-American, or runs contrary to the idea that diversity is our strength, has to be sneered at, even if it's markedly good for people on both a professional and personal level. English-speaking is linked to white people, which means demanding English speaking is white supremacy, or some dumb nonsense.
Think I'm being hyperbolic. Here's an "educator" saying that very thing.

The Left is hyper-focused on the idea that learning to speak English is racist. Even speaking English well is taboo.
But the Left is just disadvantaging the very people they say they care about every time they scream about it.
