No, Scientists Didn't Bring the Dire Wolf Back From Extinction - They Did Something Even Better

An exciting claim going around the internet is looks like something right out of Jurassic Park. Scientists used CRISPR technology to bring back the long-extinct species, the dire wolf. As cool as that would be, that's not exactly what happened.

What they did was far more exciting.

They infused gray wolves with dire wolf DNA in order to give it some of the aspects of the ancient species, which is a far more exciting outcome than simply generating a one-to-one recreation. I have no doubt that one day we will be able to reawaken long-dead species through this technology, or something very similar to it, but we're not there quite yet.

But this ability to add traits to existing species is, in my opinion, a far better and more promising technological accomplishment than merely reawakening the extinct. What we just did was prove that we can bring the strengths of the past and make the strengths of today.

I can already feel many of you reading this getting uneasy and wanting scientists to pump the brakes. While I'm of the mind this technology should be closely monitored and ethical rules applied, I can't insist enough that CRISPR tech be allowed to thrive, and I'll explain why.

Well, actually, I already have.

Last month, I wrote an article titled "God and the Machine," where I made the case that CRISPR tech, a form of DNA manipulation, isn't "playing God," it's actually doing exactly what He put us on course to do by giving us a thirst for discovery and development. To say we shouldn’t pursue this kind of knowledge is, in effect, to suggest God made a mistake in gifting us with the minds we have. I don’t hold to that. I believe this is all part of the design. We are His children, and we're just taking after Dad.

But in this article, I describe how CRISPR tech can help humanity in incredible ways:

Before we started looking to curb the issue, the way we've become stronger in nature is the weak died out. That is the "natural order," but humanity began disrupting the natural order thousands of years ago when we started coming up with ways to fix our issues, and we've only gotten better and better at it. The natural order is what humanity makes it. Right now, the natural order is that as many people survive as possible utilizing the knowledge we've gained and the technology we've developed. This even applies to our pets.

With CRISPR tech, we can look into our DNA and take out those weaknesses. Instead of countless lives being lost in order for the strongest to develop, we just take care of that weakness in an afternoon, eliminating these problems from the gene pool while saving the life.

We can effectively rewrite the book on human suffering, taking out weaknesses and adding strengths. An autoimmune disease that runs in the family can effectively be edited out, we can increase our resistance to viruses and various bacteria. Allergies? What are those?

Today it's wolves, but in a few years it's cancer, dementia, and an innumerable list of ailments and problems holding humanity back.

Right now, a big problem with this technology is the fear of unethical use of it, which is a valid concern to have, and one we should begin a serious effort into looking at. This is a power that should definitely come with boundaries, because editing DNA is an incredible power to wield. We should avoid being the "kid who just found his dad's gun" outcome that was mentioned by Dr. Malcolm in Jurassic Park

The answer is to steer carefully, not slam the brakes. This tech is here now, and like artificial intelligence, it's not going away. It's how we choose to wield it that matters, not whether it should exist. It does exist, and that cat's not going back in the box.

I'm also not suggesting we have "designer babies," an idea I find incredibly dehumanizing. I am suggesting that we save children from genetic diseases. We create a humanity that's stronger than before under the responsible use of this technology. Not superheroes, mind you, but healthy children free from the weaknesses of the past. We can end suffering before it begins.

This is a gift of the intellect given to us by our Designer, and I really don't think we should refuse it.
