Trump received a mandate from us, and that mandate was to reduce the size of government, make it more efficient, and strip it of much of the undeserved power it holds over the people.
This was, of course, only one of his mandates. "Fix the economy" was the highest priority, but if Trump truly wants to do that, especially in the long-term, the thinning out of our bloated and cocky government is key. Trump understood the assignment, and with the help of Vivek Ramaswamy and Elon Musk, is set to establish the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE.
As an aside, "DOGE" isn't just a great idea, it's brilliant marketing to take a meme and make it into a government entity meant to force the government to take itself less seriously and more seriously at the same time, just like a meme does.
Ultimately, DOGE will be Trump's real legacy. He will either be known as the president who created a system by which he returned power and money to the people, or he will be the president who failed to do so. In fact, so much is riding on DOGE being successful that its success or failure will affect the Republican Party as a whole and either enrich or damage it to a great degree.
As we can see, many Republicans are already taking this very seriously. As Indiana Republican Victoria Spartz posted on X, she is foregoing seeking a committee seat in order to focus on helping DOGE along with Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky:
"I will stay as a registered Republican but will not sit on committees or participate in the caucus until I see that Republican leadership in Congress is governing. I do not need to be involved in circuses. I would rather spend more of my time helping @DOGE and @RepThomasMassie to save our Republic, as was mandated by the American people."

Massie, too, understands DOGE's importance, stating that it will be great if you can get lawmakers onboard.
@DOGE is like the U.S. Constitution. It’ll be great… if you can get my fellow lawmakers to follow it.

They aren't the only ones. Republicans are also putting her best foot forward, according to The Hill:
In recognition that spending cuts cannot take place without congressional say-so, members have formed counterpart caucuses on Capitol Hill. The group is led by Reps. Aaron Bean (R-Fla.) and Pete Sessions (R-Texas) in the House and by Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) in the Senate.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) will also chair a new subcommittee within the House Oversight and Accountability Committee with the same acronym, called the Delivering on Government Efficiency subcommittee, next year.
The goal of the Republican Party during Trump's administration is to disrupt and halt what's killing America — at least in Washington, D.C. — which is bureaucratic inertia. Growth has become the standard for our government, and as the government has grown, the people have lost power. The standard of growth has become so normalized that when it does grow, even by leaps and bounds, people just accept it.
One very good example of this is The Patriot Act, which was one of the largest intrusions into the privacy of the people the federal government has ever pulled off.
We also tend to just accept wasteful spending. The Social Security Administration paid out $11 billion in improper payments in 2021 alone, and you probably didn't know that because few people actually raised a stink about it. Did you know there are 82 programs across 10 agencies that improve teacher quality, many of which overlap with the other, creating billions of wasted dollars? Probably not.
However, as Massie has pointed out, DOGE will mean nothing if lawmakers don't get on board and assist with enacting what the department suggests. DOGE is not a magic wand that can just be waved. If Republicans ever want to be taken seriously again, DOGE won't just be Trump's centerpiece, it will become a priority for them as well.
Because DOGE will face resistance. Bureaucrats on both sides of the aisle likely won't take the reduction of bureaucracy well. Public sector unions will likely push back with all their might to protect their status quo.
This is why Republicans must band together and push with all their might to make DOGE work. It won't just make Trump's administration a raging success and secure his legacy, but it will see to it that Republicans are seen as the party that gets things done and keeps their promises. Best of all, it will help Americans and set the country on a far better path.
DOGE has to succeed. It's the most important thing about the next four years, because if it succeeds, everything else does too.
