Former President Donald Trump is going after his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, in a fresh lawsuit that seeks $500 million for a multitude of wrongs.

According to Fox News, Trump’s legal team filed a lawsuit with over 30 pages with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida on Wednesday.

The lawsuit alleges that Cohen violated his attorney-client relationship and that Cohen took actions that would embarrass or otherwise be detrimental to Trump. This includes spreading falsehoods  “with malicious intent and to wholly self-serving ends.”

This action has apparently been taken after Cohen increased his attacks against Trump, leaving his legal team no choice but to take legal action:

It claims Cohen has, in recent months, “increased the frequency and hostility of the illicit acts” and “appears to have become emboldened and repeatedly continues to make wrongful and false statements” about Trump through various platforms.

“Such continuous and escalating improper conduct by [Cohen] has reached a proverbial crescendo and has left [Trump] with no alternative but to seek legal redress through this action,” the lawsuit states, adding that Trump has “suffered vast reputational harm as a direct result of [Cohen’s] breaches.”

The lawsuit also brings up Cohen’s confessions about his misdeeds regarding Trump in his book “Disloyal”:

The lawsuit cites one of Cohen’s books, “Disloyal,” in which he “by his own account,” admits he “‘lied’ about the money he was owed in reimbursement for an expense he made on [Trump’s] behalf, instead ‘loading up’ and ‘sneakily upping [his] bonus’ in order to ‘counter screw’ [Trump].”

Cohen resigned as counsel for the Trump Organization in January 2017, when Trump was inaugurated, but continued to represent him personally until June 2018.

“The timing of Disloyal’s release, just prior to the No. 3, 2020 Presidential Election, suggests that Defendant intended to improperly disclose Plaintiff’s confidences when it would be most lucrative to do so — and while Disloyal would be sure to have the most damaging reputational effect,” the lawsuit said.

This lawsuit is happening on the heels of Trump’s not-guilty plea against 34 charges brought against him by Manhattan D.A. Alvin Bragg. While Trump’s lawsuit against Cohen does bring up the hush money payments made to porn star Stormy Daniels, Trump’s legal team said the lawsuit against Cohen has nothing to do with the charges against Trump.

The relationship between Cohen and Trump has been a long one. Before he was his personal lawyer, Cohen was an executive at Trump’s real estate company. Cohen was fiercely loyal to Trump, going so far as to claim that he’d take a bullet for him, but that relationship has badly soured and Cohen claims to regret having that friendship with Trump.

“I am ashamed because I know what Mr. Trump is,” Cohen once told a congressional committee. “He is a racist. He is a con man. He is a cheat.”

Cohen was convicted of arranging the aforementioned hush money payments as well as other federal charges that landed him a three-year prison sentence. Federal prosecutors would opt out of charging Trump and the Federal Election Commission dropped its case in 2021.
