Say what you will about Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas but we know a few things for sure. The guy is funny and witty, he’s a bit of a nerd, and he’s one of the best damn debators currently walking the halls of Washington. If you’re stepping into a debate with Cruz, then you better know your stuff backward and forward, because he does, and he may even show you that he knows more about your own argument than you do.

I’m not sure former actress turned activist Alyssa Milano knows this about Cruz. Like most people on the left, they just see an evangelical politician with ideas they consider backward and outdated. This is probably why Milano told Cruz that she’d love to debate him in person, and Cruz naturally accepted.

It all started when Milano asked someone to quote the passage of the Bible where it said we have a right to a gun. Cruz responded by saying that while the Bible doesn’t mention guns specifically, the Bible does mention a right to life and liberty, and this includes the right to defend your life and family.

Cruz continued by citing Exodus 22:2, and laying down how it relates to the Constitution and then proceeded to give examples of how American citizens used their firearms to protect themselves and others in something. It was, to say the least, a good educational opportunity for Milano.

Milano, however, didn’t take it well. She challenged Cruz to a public debate so that the “American people can hear your bulls**t 1st hand.” She said that after throwing 1 Peter 4:8 at him, which tells us to love each other deeply above all.

Cruz graciously accepted under the condition that the conversation is “civil and positive.”

“I’d be happy to sit down & visit next week about uniting to stop gun violence & about the Constitution. If we can have a civil & positive conversation—in the spirit of 1 Peter 4:8 as you suggest—despite our political differences, that might help resolve the discord in our Nation,” tweeted Cruz.

Milano needs to understand going in that she’s probably not as equipped as she thinks she is for this debate. She’s only demonstrated that she debates on raw emotion and any facts she presents seem to be altered to fit a worldview. Her use of 1 Peter 4:8 is a perfect example of this, but she’s demonstrated other times when she’s tried to utilize Biblical passage to push left-leaning agendas.

In April, Milano attempted to use Christs’s words in John 3:12 to justify abortion. The passage refers to Christ talking about how the path to Heaven is to be born again, and Milano essentially used the passage to justify killing a child before they can even be born a first time.

Meanwhile, Cruz’s knowledge runs deep and he’s shown he’s capable of critical thought. As Brandon Rottinghaus, a political science professor at the University of Houston said after watching him against Beto O’Rourke, “Cruz thrives on this kind of political combat and is hard to put on the canvas.”

Cruz has been doing this for a long time too. He’s been a debate champion since he was in college. If it’s any testament to how good he is, he was the last man standing in the 2016 Republican primaries against Donald Trump at a time when Trump’s brand of collectivism was in fashion and Cruz’s classic approach to politics wasn’t.

Milano is going to come out swinging with accusations and mistruths, and Cruz will shrug it off by calmly stating facts. Milano, given her past, will likely appeal to emotional arguments that won’t phase Cruz in the least, but he will show sympathy towards them, further making her look like someone who brought a rubber knife to a gunfight.

Milano’s newfound relevance has gone to her head. She believes that retweets are proof that her arguments are good. She’s about to find out how wrong she is.
