We gave Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) some serious props for her tweet about lawmakers having principles and not getting a paycheck during the government shutdown while other federal employees aren’t getting paid, yet Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) is actually putting his congressional money where his mouth is.
That’s more than what AOC can say for herself. Her response to still receiving a paycheck in light of her tweet was “I’ve gotta run!”
Crenshaw, however, said something completely different, and completely unprompted.
“I cannot in good conscience get paid while federal employees’ financial futures hang in the balance because of this partial government shutdown,” wrote Crenshaw in a tweet. “I’ve asked the Chief Administrative Officer to withhold my pay until we have come to an agreement to adequately fund border security.”
This tweet included a picture of a signed document requesting his pay be withheld until the shutdown ends.

Crenshaw’s character is a beacon to the rest of Washington, and it’s a shame it’s not staffed with more people like him.
Crenshaw wants to see the government reopened for certain, but the Texas Republican and military veteran believes that the best way to do that is for the government to give the border “adequate funding,” and stated so in a tweet.
Great meeting with President's Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney, where he assured Texans that he understood the deep concerns about using Harvey relief funds for the border.
Best solution is still reopening government with adequate funding for border.

He also cheered on Steve Scalise during his floor speech about the case for border security.
I don't usually recommend that people watch CSPAN, but Minority Whip @SteveScalise is absolutely worth watching right now. He makes a clear and coherent case for border security. Dems won't negotiate even one dollar, and they are holding federal workers hostage as a result.

As of right now, the Democrats are outright refusing to give one nickel to the $5 billion dollars asked by the Trump administration for the border wall. However, both sides are outright refusing to cave as whoever wins this shutdown fight will see themselves swimming in momentum for 2020.
Interestingly enough, many Democrats leaders held the same beliefs as Trump did. During the Obama administration, the Democrats asked for $40 billion for funding border security as opposed to the five being asked of by Trump. This includes Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), who is on video in 2009 calling securing the border “common sense.”
