Beto O'Rourke Overtakes Biden as Dem's Top 2020 Candidate In New Poll

Ted Cruz and the ex-punk rocker turned Democratic congressman trying to upset him, O’Rourke, don’t agree on much. But both introduced bills prohibiting U.S. authorities from separating children from parents charged with crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally prior to President Donald Trump’s executive order last week doing much the same thing(AP Photo/Richard W. You can be a failed Senate candidate with not much in the way of accomplishments except a bad rap for stealing land from the poor and trying to flee a drunk driving incident, and STILL be the number one choice for Democrats in 2020.

I’m not sure if Democrats are willing to sink that low or if they’re that desperate, but it would appear that the Killians posing as a Corona, Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke, has now become the Democrat’s top choice for 2020 Presidential candidate over previous frontrunner Joe Biden.

From The Hill:

Outgoing Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) narrowly leads former Vice President Joe Biden as a potential 2020 contender among members of the progressive group MoveOn.org.

A straw poll released by the group on Tuesday put O’Rourke ahead of Biden by little more than half a percentage point — 15.6 percent to 14.95 percent. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) comes in after that at 13.15 percent.

A plurality of members surveyed — 17.89 percent — said they either didn’t know who they would choose in 2020 or that they preferred “someone else,” the survey found.

Interestingly, O’Rourke still hasn’t officially announced his intention to run in 2020, but as I’ve covered earlier, all the clues that he completely intends to try to defeat Trump are there, including the fact that he still has millions in his campaign accounts, as well as the fact that he went from flat out denying he’d run to saying he hasn’t ruled it out.

Still, this is just one poll, and it’s only half a percentage point that O’Rourke leads Biden by. In a toss-up, it’s likely that Democrat establishment will back Biden before Beto, as Biden has more experience and name recognition. O’Rourke has star power, but it’s star power left over from a massive campaign to elevate him to electable within a red state. It’s not likely he’ll get the same treatment again.

Ben Shapiro over at the DailyWire mentioned that O’Rourke is well poised to take the Democrat nomination thanks to his courtship of several of the left’s camps, including the Bernie Bros:

That’s certainly a troubling sign for Sanders, who wants to recapitulate his 2016 run by recapturing the hearts of the so-called Bernie Bros. But it now looks like the Bernie Bros may have been wooed by the charismatic Texas representative, and may be turning away from the crotchety old Vermont socialist. What’s more, O’Rourke has crossover power with the two other segments of the Democratic base: the intersectional coalition that Barack Obama captured so easily in 2008, and the mainstream base that Sanders could never consolidate against Hillary Clinton.

This all may very well be true, and how Biden will win the mainstream base will be interesting to watch. The key will be winning over the moderates on both parties, which Biden is more likely to do than O’Rourke given O’Rourke’s social justice tendencies.

Time will tell, and we still have a ways to go before all the Democratic ducks are in a row, but it’s gearing up to be an interesting race for the Democrats.
