Democrats are Lining Up for Aggressive Gun Control Push Next Year

Following their typical line of authoritarianism, the Democrats are going to follow up their retaking of the House with their favorite losing issue.

According to the Washington Examiner, Democrats have ousted 2nd Amendment friendly politicians and replaced them with politicians that have achieved failing ratings with the NRA:

Gun control proponents are buoyed by the takeover of the House. Democrats ousted at least 15 House Republicans who had an “A” rating with the National Rifle Association with candidates who received an “F” rating, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Rep. Mike Thompson, D-Calif., told the Journal on Friday that he plans to introduce legislation that will mandate universal background checks. Thompson is chairman of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force.

Among the incoming Democrats is Lucy McBath, who defeated Rep. Karen Handel, R-Ga. She was a former spokeswoman for the gun control group Everytown for Gun Safety backed by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The group spent $38 million during the 2018 election cycle, compared to the NRA, which spent $20 million.

Much of the attempts to push for more gun control, however, will be all dog and pony. Republicans have only become more powerful in the Senate, thus stymying any legislation from Democrats.

However, the legislation isn’t the end-game for Democrats, it’s the optics. Attempts at pushing for “universal background checks” and allowing Republicans to deny them will give them the narrative that Republicans don’t care enough about innocent victims of gun crime. This is pure sensationalism, as “universal background checks” is aimed at private transactions, such as those Democrats believe happen at gun shows under the “gun show loophole.”

This is, of course, a ridiculous notion. The vast majority of gun dealers at gun shows are federally licensed firearm dealers who have to follow the federal procedures with every sale of a firearm, including background checks.

Despite a lot of what the Democrats want to pass is useless legislation that will waste time, it seems to be a priority for Democrats. According to the Washington Times, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said as much.

“This will be a priority for us in the next Congress,” said Pelosi.
