The Remmys Fractured Media Nominations: DOGE Bear Attacks, Selective ICE Racism, and Used Toes for Sale

It is time for a new round of nominations for nefarious news nonsense! In recognizing the efforts of press unprofessionalism, journalistic sloth, and generally deserved media mockery, we nominate the efforts for end-of-the-year honors. To commemorate that past of muckraking reporting and shoe leather investigation, we have created The Golden Remington Awards. Our trophy honors the olden days when hard-scrabble hacks committed actual journalism and hammered out dispatches on those hefty wordsmith devices.

Throughout the year, we compile some of the most fractured examples of journalism, nominating them for the uncoveted dishonor of “winning” our undistinguished Remmy Award. At the end of the year, we recognize the greats by gathering examples in a number of categories and judiciously choosing the deserving performances. Here are the latest nominees for The Remmys.

  • Molly Jong-Fast - Vanity Fair

The entrenched never-Trumper Ms. Fast delivered what she felt was an indictment of the president for failing to deliver on his core campaign issues. As they say in social media circles, this did not age well. What is remarkable is that the age problems arose almost immediately after publishing her critique.

First, she claims Trump is distracted by pushing for items his own party will not support, namely removing taxes on tips, overtime wages, and Social Security payments. Yes, the GOP is nothing but a party opposing tax cuts! But she goes on to point out that - even though he has not been in office for all of two months - he has done nothing to bring down economic stresses like he had campaigned on doing. Then, within a day or two of her sharing this with the public, we got news that gas was below $3.00 in the national average, inflation was reduced more than predicted, and eggs saw a plunge in prices to a point below where they were when Trump took office.

  • Emmet Lyons, Joanne Stocker, Ciara Moran - CBS News

Unable to restrain itself from the media habit of finding a reason to dump on a holiday, CBS News managed to come up with a way to tie St. Patrick’s Day in with the “scandal” in the press regarding President Trump’s deportation policies. Even though ICE raids have been focused on hardened criminal elements and gang members, here we are told that Irish Americans who are not properly credentialed face a threat. There is no instance where Irish residents have in fact been targeted, but they “live in fear,” and it is “a concern” and “a worry.”

Then one undocumented waitress in Chicago had this perfect quote for the press:

  • While she is concerned she may become a "collateral damage" target for the administration, ICE raids in her neighborhood have targeted predominantly Latino communities — something she has condemned as racist.

The only thing missing is a quote from a Democrat saying they are worried we will not have anyone to pick our potato crops, so the price of Ruffles will skyrocket.

  • Michelle Boorstein - Washington Post

In another example of the press taking the sympathetic approach to illegals in the country, Boorstein reported on a D.C. Catholic church installing new leadership that will “push for humanization of migrants in the Trump era.”

We are not aware of anyone - in the administration or elsewhere - currently claiming immigrants are not humans, but this might be a lightly reported detail in the national discussion.

Distinguished Breaking News

  • Bill Weir - CNN

As Lee Zeldin was publishing a series of orders where he was curtailing a number of actions at the Environmental Protection Agency, this became understandably bothersome to former sportscaster turned climate expert Bill Weir. He came on to complain about these rollbacks and also insulted Zeldin and the EPA for rushing out these orders and left them filled with typos and programming placeholders on the pages.

This complaint did nothing to counter the actions, of course, but in his corrective report, Weir was completely incorrect. Where he accused Zeldin of leaving in coding with four zeros was in fact accurate EPA headings for the programs, as it was a string of four-letter “O”s. Bill had to sheepishly come on the next night and admit his error, but he retained his disapproval all the same - even though he was guilty of rushing out his countering report without all the facts as he accused Zeldin of rushing out his reports.

  • Ian Lee - CBS News

We have all heard the dire results of DOGE cuts (and none of the positive effects, of course). Ian Lee is on the scene in one national park and he was literally placing his life on the line. As Lee explained it, if you arrive at a park and try to get bear safety information from a ranger station, you are out of luck and quite probably in danger because the cuts have led to the layoffs of many rangers.

So when in bear country you will need to govern yourself accordingly.

Distinguished International Reporting

  • Associated Press

A politician in Switzerland has been fined for a violation of that nation’s gun laws. Marc Jaisli, a local council member in Buchs, a town west of Zurich, was ordered by prosecutors to pay in Swiss francs a sum totaling over $7,000 US dollars. This was due to his purchase from the Chinese site Temu that he made for his godchildren.

The authorities decreed that “because they could be confused for real firearms due to their appearance”, he was in violation – despite the “guns being water pistols, made of pink plastic.

Distinguished Local Reporting

  • Boca News Now

There was a flurry of police, a Haz-Mat team, and fire rescue activity surrounding a Boca Raton retirement home – or, was there?!

On March 12, Boca News Now broke the story of a grenade possibly located at the St. Andrews Estate North retirement complex. One resident discovered the item in her husband’s effects on site and turned it over to the guards on duty.

This story has no fewer than five updates, including the local Boca Raton Fire Rescue denying being sent out, despite their units being witnessed on scene.

  • NBC News

“Woman Admits Trying to Sell Human Toes Regurgitated By Dogs”

The only thing that threw us off about this story was that it originated in Australia and was not a Florida Woman story.
