His work wasn’t without impact. Thousands of layoffs and the streamlining of agencies marked a shift toward efficiency, even if the scope fell short of his grand vision. In his farewell post on X, Musk expressed gratitude to President Trump for the chance to tackle waste. For conservatives, this optimism signals that the fight for leaner government is far from over.

Musk’s exit coincided with his public critique of President Trump’s “Big, beautiful bill,” a legislative mix of tax cuts and immigration enforcement. In a CBS interview, he called it a “massive spending bill” that balloons the deficit and “undermines the work” of DOGE. “I think a bill can be big or it can be beautiful,” he quipped, “but I don’t know if it can be both.”

Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) seized on Musk’s remarks, pushing for a “more aggressive” Senate version of the bill. Saying, "The bill may be big, but it’s not beautiful yet." Senator Lee tweeted. Far from derailing the conservative cause, Musk’s critique could sharpen it, encouraging lawmakers to align bold policies with fiscal discipline.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) praised Musk’s work, vowing to build on DOGE’s findings with further cuts. President Trump, ever a Musk admirer, called him “a truly great American” and hinted at refining the legislative agenda, saying, “We will be negotiating that bill, and I’m not happy about certain aspects of it, but I’m thrilled by other aspects of it.”

As Musk returns to Tesla and SpaceX, conservatives can take pride in what he brought to the table: an outsider’s zeal for reform, a spotlight on government waste, and a blueprint for progress.
