Disney's New 'Captain America' Just Decided to Set His Box Office Prospects on Fire

Does Disney enjoy losing money? Because it really seems like they enjoy losing money. From the complete botching of the "Star Wars" universe to the obsession with girl-bossing live-action remakes of its classic films, the once-storied production company simply refuses to learn any lessons.

Sure enough, despite Disney's Marvel franchise flopping over the last several years, some genius decided it'd be a great idea to race-swap "Captain America" with a guy who doesn't believe the role represents America. No, I'm not kidding. That's an actual thing Anthony Mackie said while promoting the upcoming fourth installment in the series.

MACKIE: For me, Captain America represents a lot of different things & I don’t think the term, you know, "America" should be one of those representations. It’s about a man who keeps his word, who has honor, dignity, and integrity. Someone who is trustworthy and dependable.

I've never been much of a comic fan so far be it from me to offer a correction here, but I'm pretty sure that "Captain America" does represent America. I mean, that seems to be the entire point, from the character's backstory to, you know, his name.

Part of me wants to imagine Disney executives pulling their hair out over this, but is that actually an accurate assumption given they are the ones who green-light these projects and casting decisions? There already set to lose hundreds of millions of dollars on their woke "Snow White" reboot due to Rachel Zegler's deranged political rantings. Mackie is no stranger to letting his left-wing sensibilities hang out there either, having produced one of the most cringe scenes to ever grace a cinema.

MACKIE: This isn't about easy decisions, senator.

SENATOR: You just don't understand.

MACKIE: I'm a back man carrying the stars and stripes. What don't I understand? Every time I pick this thing up, I know there are millions of people out there who are gonna hate me for it. Even now, here, I feel it. The judgment, the stares, and there's nothing I can do to change it. Yet, I'm still here. No super-serum, no blonde hair or blue eyes.

MACKIE: You've got to do better senator!

Mackie also once criticized the "Lord of the Rings," arguably the greatest movie trilogy of all time, as being "too white."

Now ask yourself if any of this is going to help dig Disney out of its massive hole. Mackie's commentary wasn't even ambiguous. He's clearly suggesting that America as a nation does not exhibit honor, dignity, and integrity. Whatever one may think about that in a modern context, "Captain America" as a character is literally a World War II super-soldier whose entire existence centers on representing America.

Disney desperately needs "Captain America: Brave New World" to be a success. Instead, this may ensure it's a box office failure. It was already facing an uphill battle given Marvel's woes, and the perception of anti-Americanism now surrounding the film is only going to make the hike steeper.

It doesn't have to be this way. There are people out there who still like Star Wars, Marvel, and whatever other franchises Disney has set on fire over the last decade. All they have to do is put out the flames and change course, but they just can't do it. Thus, the financial pain will continue.
