WATCH: Actor James Van Der Beek Slams DNC for Coddling Joe Biden

Not all people in Hollywood are happy about the DNC’s decision to coronate Joe Biden as their 2024 presidential nominee. Actor James Van Der Beek put out an Instagram video decrying the decision to cancel the primary debates. He also noted the president’s declining mental state and what they could mean going forward.

You may remember Van Der Beek from his leading roles in Dawson’s Creek and Varsity Blues, as well as his time on one of the CSI spinoff, shows. He also appeared on Dancing With the Stars in 2019.

VAN DER BEEK: The DNC is saying there will not be a debate to decide the nominee for president. Are you ******* kidding me? There’s no debate over an 80-year-old who, if he lives, will be the oldest sitting president in the history of the country? And if he doesn’t live, has a vice president whose approval rating is worse than his? This guy has obviously declining mental faculties. You’re putting him up in front of a podium with flashcards and what the questions are going to be asked. What about the will of the people?

If we don’t have a debate, this is not a democracy by the people, it’s democracy by them. Who? Big banks, big business, big tech, big pharma, big government, big whatever. What the hell? How do we have a government, how do we have democracy if we’re letting a small little back room of people make all the decisions for us? It’s not a democracy and it doesn’t work and y’all have been wrong about a lot these past couple of years in that back room. I could be wrong about all this. I could be wrong about the guy not being fit for the job, I could be wrong about the other people being right, being legitimate, being crazy. You know what would solve that? A debate.

Given the argument being made by Van Der Beek, my assumption is that he’s a Democrat, and searching his past postings, that seems to be the case. If he weren’t a Democrat, he would have no reason to care about what the DNC does. Regardless, though, he’s obviously not wrong.

Joe Biden is currently 80 years old. If he wins the presidency, he’ll be the oldest person to ever be inaugurated for the office, and keep in mind, we are nearly two years from that point. Given Biden’s current mental state, one can only imagine how far he will have declined by the time January of 2025 rolls around. I shudder to think what that would even look like.

Sitting behind Biden is one of the most unpopular political figures in modern history, and Van Der Beek seems to be suggesting that it would be a disaster for Democrats if Biden couldn’t finish the campaign and Kamala Harris was stuck in his place. Instead, he wants a real primary with a real debate. Who can blame him?

The dirty little secret about Biden’s health and mental degradation is that many Democrats agree it’s a problem. They are simply too scared to say anything out of fear it would help Republicans. The problem with painting yourself into a corner, though, is that you eventually have to get out. Biden doesn’t have far to go before he’d no longer be a viable option in 2024 as a nominee. If he can’t make it until Election Day, Democrats are stuck.

The DNC screwed up here by not setting a standard by which debates would happen. They could have easily said that a candidate must get 20 percent in the polls to trigger debates and a real primary. That would have been a really high bar for anyone to reach against an incumbent president, and it would have allowed the DNC to wash its hands of any decision that would be seen as silencing its own party members. Instead, they chose to arbitrarily cancel the debates without waiting to see if a real challenger would emerge.

For the record, I don’t care who the president is, I’d like to always see a vigorous primary with debates. I think the process helps any eventual nominee.
