Notorious Left-Wing Outlet BuzzFeed News Is Shutting Down

Notorious left-wing outlet BuzzFeed News is closing its doors. That comes after years of turmoil, including layoffs, plagued the company. Employees also voted in 2019 to unionize, leading to a strike in 2022.

But as is so often the case, liberal utopias simply don’t comport with reality, and BuzzFeed News has reportedly never been profitable (The New York Times).

BuzzFeed is shutting down its news division as part of an effort to cut 15 percent of its work force, the company’s chief executive, Jonah Peretti, said Thursday in a memo to employees.

About 60 jobs will be affected by the shuttering of BuzzFeed News, according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity. The company will offer jobs at HuffPost and BuzzFeed.com to more than a dozen BuzzFeed News staff members affected by the closure in an attempt to salvage some positions.

In his memo, Mr. Peretti said he “made the decision to overinvest” in BuzzFeed’s news division because he loved the work it produced but acknowledged that he was slow to accept that social-media platforms would not provide financial support required to make it profitable.

One of BuzzFeed News’ most infamous moves was to publish the fully-debunked Steele Dossier that targeted Donald Trump. After a leak to CNN’s Jake Tapper in early 2017 appeared to confirm the existence of the dossier, BuzzFeed News then made the decision to throw the whole thing out into the open without any verification. In 2019, the company spent millions trying to prove it was true but came up empty.

Over the years, few outlets have shown more of a liberal bias so this won’t be any great loss to conservatives. It does go to show that the left is its own worst enemy. Had the company sought to actually bring its employees to heel and make a profit, perhaps it wouldn’t be closing down.
