House Judiciary Republicans Heading to New York to Go After Bragg, but Danger Looms

The House Judiciary Committee, chaired by Republican Jim Jordan, is headed to New York to conduct a field hearing into DA Alvin Bragg. According to The New York Post, what is likely to be a GOP-only group will be interviewing people who have been victims of Bragg’s tenure.

That would obviously include New Yorkers who have been on the short end of Bragg refusing to prosecute crimes. The hearing is scheduled for April 17th.

The House Judiciary Committee will hear from “victims” of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s policies during a hearing in New York next month — escalating a confrontation with the progressive prosecutor over his unprecedented criminal case against former President Donald Trump, The Post has learned.

The “field hearing” will be held at 9 a.m. on Monday, April 17 at the Jacob Javits Federal Building just blocks from Bragg’s Lower Manhattan office and the courthouse where Trump, 76, was arraigned on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records last week.

A source told The Post that the hearing will examine “New York’s rampant crime and victims of Alvin Bragg.”

According to the report, a list of witnesses has already been put together, though Jordan isn’t sharing it publicly yet. Whether any of the television networks will actually air the hearing is another matter. CSPAN, which normally operates as a pooler of sorts when it comes to congressional proceedings skipped the last field hearing, which took place at the Southern border.

I think this could be a good opportunity to highlight the harm Soros-backed prosecutors across the country have wrought on Americans. In order to pull that off, though, House Republicans will have to have some message discipline because if it devolves into making Donald Trump the center of the universe, it’s not going to have the intended effect.

That’s not my opinion. It’s just reality.

Nobody on the right wants to deal with those numbers (which have been repeated in numerous non-partisan polls over the last few weeks) because it means getting accused of being “anti-Trump.” Regardless, the GOP has to start reckoning with the reality in front of them, not the reality they desire. A focus on the multitude of everyday victims of Bragg’s policies is a very good thing. Heck, Bragg should be just the beginning as there are many more DAs to put the spotlight on.

But to just make this about Bragg and Donald Trump plays right into the negative perception the vast majority of Americans have about the former president, allowing them to retreat to their respective corners. Is that fair? No, it’s not fair. Bragg’s charges against Trump are ridiculous and an affront to the legal system. But nothing about politics is fair, and complaining about it won’t change anything.

Trump always says that the system is coming after you and he’s just in the way. If that’s true, then this is a chance to focus on who the system is really harming at a base level. Namely, those without major platforms and political parties paying their legal bills. Those who have been violently victimized, and no one has heard their cries. If the GOP keeps the focus there, on everyday Americans without political labels, it’ll accomplish something and neuter the far left’s counterattack. Republicans should try playing chess for once.
