Trump Formally Leaves the WHO While Other Republicans Show Themselves to Be the Feckless Weasels They Are

There’s apparently no topic tame enough for some feckless Republicans to take a stand on.

Case in point? Today, Donald Trump formerly withdrew from the World Health Organization. This came after months of revelations of corruption and misconduct by the UN subsidiary, which the United States provides the majority of the budget for. Just recently, it was revealed that China never even reported the coronavirus to them. What was the response from the WHO? Slavish devotion to the CCP as they assisted in the cover-ups of malfeasance.

In short, this is not an organization that deserves one dime of U.S. taxpayer money. Like all international bodies, it’s become a giant money suck which rarely delivers even a fraction of the value of the cash pumped into it. Trump rightly decided enough was enough and pulled the trigger on ending our relationship.

You’d expect Republicans to be able to rally around this decision. It’s not like the WHO haven’t been brazen in their misappropriation of time and resources while they shamelessly shilled for the Chinese. There’s no question that Dr. Tedros, the Director General of the WHO, has numerous conflicts of interest regarding China and has sought to protect them.

But nope. Here’s GOP Sen. Lamar Alexander pushing back on Trump’s move because of course he is.

First, what would submitting recommendations to Congress accomplish? They have no jurisdiction over the WHO. Besides, given the Senate’s inability to hold pretty much anyone accountable for anything, what person in their right mind would go to them to fix issues with an international body that’s basically an arm of the Chinese?

As to the rest of his worries, perhaps the WHO should have changed their behavior if those are issues worth considering? The Trump administration gave them months to respond to the list of infractions committed. Why is the onus on the U.S. to continue funding them while they spit in our faces and help propagate a global pandemic at the behest of President Xi? Is there no expectation that Dr. Tedros actually run his organization in a way that’s not completely corrupt?

Alexander’s dissent is the Republican party’s cowardice in a nutshell. They are always too terrified to take a stand on anything that doesn’t involve taxes or big business. They’d rather keep taking shots to the face that dare step out of their own comfort zones. As much as I dislike some of Trump’s antics, he and those like him are the only thing holding the Republican party together at this point. If the President is defeated in 2020, what will even be the point of the GOP?  Is anyone really jonesing for a resurgence of a party of Mitt Romney and Larry Hogan? That party is a useless, dead party and will deserve its fate.

Instead of recognizing the existential threat the country faces and working to win in 2020, many Republicans are resigned to sitting on their hands while sniping at their own side for doing things that are obviously right. By doing so, they lose all credibility to complain about Joe Biden if he becomes president. They also lose any justification for remaining in office at all.
