Migrant families - border
Migrant families cross the Rio Grande to get illegally across the border into the United States, to turn themselves in to authorities and ask for asylum, next to the Paso del Norte international bridge, near El Paso, Texas, Friday, May 31, 2019. The Border Patrol said it has encountered more than 180 groups of over 100 people since October, compared with 13 in the previous 12-month period and two the year before. (AP Photo/Christian Torrez)

Bank of America has decided that the best way to help minors who are detained at the border is to…not lend to facilities that need the money to improve conditions where those children are housed? Makes sense.

The Twitter account sharing the story is Sleep Giants, which is a leftist astroturf project that tries to pressure private companies into bowing before their political will. They’ve literally got hundreds of people who just call up random companies they’d otherwise never patronize and pretend to be very upset customers.

Unfortunately, the tact works and it’s leading to a complete division within our society. Here’s some of the write up at Bloomberg.

“We have decided to exit the relationship’’ with companies that provide prison and immigration-detention services, Vice Chairman Anne Finucane said Wednesday in an interview. “We’ve done our due diligence that we said we would do at the annual meeting, and this is the decision we’ve made.”

The move followed a review by the bank’s environmental, social and governance, or ESG, committee, which included site visits and consultation with clients, civil rights leaders, criminal justice experts and academics. The Charlotte, North Carolina-based lender also met with its internal Hispanic and black leaders.

This is incredibly stupid for a lot of reasons, not the least of which being that not lending to those who manage detention faclities doesn’t actually change the laws on detention. That means this will lead to worse conditions, not better. It’s akin to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez calling for Wayfair to boycott selling beds to HHS. How does making it worse for the kids who have to be legally detained (you can’t just release minors onto the street) help them?

Even in the case of adult prisons, those people aren’t going to just be let out of jail now. A lack of capital only hurts the prisoners more.

But common sense never need apply when it comes to leftism and the emotional tripe that it traffics in.
