Here Comes the Pain: CBO Warns Schumer Shutdown Is Going to Take a Big Bite Out of the GDP

We’re now in the 29th day of the Schumer Shutdown, and the damage from the Democrats’ reckless abuse of power is starting to take its toll. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits are in danger and could dry up on November 1, leaving as many as 40 million low-income people scrambling to feed their families. Many federal workers have been sent home or are working without pay.

NBC News reports, “Tuesday marked the first time during this shutdown that certain 'excepted' workers, such as TSA agents and air traffic controllers tasked with keeping the skies safe, missed a full paycheck.”

Flights around the country have already routinely seen serious delays due to staffing shortages, so it’s unknown how much worse the situation will get. All so Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and his cronies can demand that the Republicans simply bend the knee to their leftist demands, demands that the American people resoundingly rejected in the November elections.

Now the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) is weighing in, and they’re saying in addition to all the pain and suffering the shutdown is already causing, it’s also going to take a big bite out of our economic numbers:

"In CBO’s assessment, the shutdown will delay federal spending and have a negative effect on the economy that will mostly, but not entirely, reverse once the shutdown ends," the analysis said.

The gross domestic product is almost certainly going to take a hit (emphasis mine):

However, CBO projected that real GDP will be lower in the fourth quarter of 2025 than it would have been otherwise.

"Depending on its length, the government shutdown will reduce annualized real GDP growth in that quarter by 1.0 to 2.0 percentage points. After the shutdown, real GDP will be temporarily higher than it would have been otherwise," CBO said.

"Although most of the decline in real GDP will be recovered eventually, CBO estimates that between $7 billion and $14 billion (in 2025 dollars) will not be."

Fourteen billion dollars. Thanks, Schumer.

The longer this goes on, the worse it will get. Take note, Chuck:

CBO noted that while many of the economic effects of the government shutdown will be temporary, "Those effects will intensify the longer the shutdown lasts."

George Washington University Law Professor and frequent pundit Jonathan Turley has thoughts:

Although the CBO keeps going to great pains to use the word “temporary” about the negative impacts of the Schumer Shutdown, that’s a guess at best, and it could certainly cause longer-term damage and a hit to the GDP much larger than their estimates. Chuck and the Democrats want their healthcare for illegal aliens and other pet leftist causes funded, and they don’t care who gets hurt in their bid to get there.

Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
