Shock Ruling in Luigi Mangione's NYC Case Shows Again That System Is Broken

With most decent people still reeling over the assassination of Charlie Kirk, a judge in New York City issued a shock ruling Tuesday in the case of another senseless, cold-blooded killing: the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in mid-town Manhattan in December 2024.

Unbelievably, the judge overseeing Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg’s case against suspect Luigi Mangione threw out the two terrorism charges, and his reasoning will make your blood boil:

"There was no evidence presented of a desire to terrorize the public, inspire widespread fear, engage in a broader campaign of violence, or to conspire with organized terrorist groups," Judge Gregory Carro found in a 12-page written decision. "Here, the crime - the heinous, but targeted and discrete killing of one person -- is very different from the examples of terrorism set forth in the statute."

Mangione used murder and fear to get across his wider point that he doesn’t like the way the healthcare system works. Let’s look at how the FBI defines terrorism, shall we?

The FBI defines terrorism, domestic or international, as the unlawful use of force or violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a Government or civilian population in furtherance of political or social objectives.

You be the judge, but that sounds an awful lot like exactly what Mangione did to me. Remember, he wrote political messages on the shell casings.

The case of Mangione brought out the same type of twisted souls we are now seeing in the aftermath of the Kirk tragedy: people openly celebrating and condoning cold-blooded murder. It is never something I thought we would see on such a wide scale in this country, and it’s revolting.

Mangione still faces numerous other state charges, as well as a slew of federal counts—and could still face the death penalty for the latter. If there were ever an argument for paying the ultimate price—shooting a man you’ve never met in the back for political reasons—this would certainly be at the top of the list.

Meanwhile, although, according to the judge, "there was no evidence presented of a [Mangione’s] desire to terrorize the public," the public is terrorized anyway:

The NYPD's Counterterrorism and Intelligence Bureau is reportedly warning businesses, political groups and other public figures that the risk of more assassinations remains elevated, ABC News reported Tuesday, citing an internal threat assessment.

This ruling makes little sense to me, a layman, but I certainly hope that the federal charges lead to actual justice and make up for this calamity.

Many on the left have turned killers like Luigi Mangione into cult heroes, and it’s depraved.
