US Blasts ISIS Camps in Syria As Dictator Bashar Al-Assad's Regime Falls

U.S. Central Command announced Sunday that American military forces conducted dozens of airstrikes on ISIS camps in Syria as the notorious regime of dictator Bashar Assad falls. The United States is concerned that bad actors—terrorists—will try to take advantage of the power vacuum as Assad has reportedly fled to Russia.

After Assad’s family ruled over Syria for more than 50 years, Assad was forced to flee Syria to Russia, where he was granted asylum, when a coalition of largely radical Islamist groups led a sweeping offensive across Syria and captured the country’s capital city.
CENTCOM announced on Sunday that it has conducted strikes against ISIS leaders, operatives and camps as part of an ongoing mission to "disrupt, degrade and defeat ISIS."

The strikes against the ISIS leaders, operatives, and camps were conducted as part of the ongoing mission to disrupt, degrade, and defeat ISIS, in order to prevent the terrorist group from conducting external operations and to ensure that ISIS does not seek to take advantage of the current situation to reconstitute in central Syria.
The operation struck over 75 targets using multiple U.S. Air Force assets, including B-52s, F-15s, and A-10s.
Battle damage assessments are underway, and there are no indications of civilian casualties.
CENTCOM, together with allies and partners in the region, will continue to carry out operations to degrade ISIS operational capabilities even during this dynamic period in Syria.
"There should be no doubt - we will not allow ISIS to reconstitute and take advantage of the current situation in Syria," said General Michael Erik Kurilla, "All organizations in Syria should know that we will hold them accountable if they partner with or support ISIS in any way."

This statement is best understood as the parting shot of a failed, lame-duck president trying to carve out a legacy for himself. It is deeply dishonest on many points, but this is Biden, so the dishonesty is baked in.
Biden tries to take credit for Russia, Hezbollah, and Iran being unable to pull Assad's chestnuts out of the fire; he says, "Because all three of them are far weaker today than they were when I took office, and let's remember why."

While, as my colleague Ward Clark likes to say, the “unaliving” of ISIS terrorists is always a good thing, Joe Biden continues to show he’s not fit to be commander-in-chief, and I think we’d all feel better if President-elect Donald Trump were overseeing this situation as it develops.
