Michigan: Please Pick Up Illegals at Airport, Find Housing, Enroll Kids in School, and Find Them Jobs

John F. Kennedy uttered one of his most famous lines in his 1961 inaugural address: “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.”

It was a noble notion, and one that resonates to this day: we as citizens need to participate in our constitutional republic and give back to society in order to make it great.

Nevertheless, I’m not sure JFK’s vision involved Americans taking illegal immigrants into their homes and providing for their needs. When he said, “Ask not what your country can do for you,” I’m guessing he assumed the government was at least taking care of one of its most basic jobs – securing the nation’s borders.

I’m not going to pretend to be able to read the mind of the late president, but I am able to say that the state of Michigan’s request to its residents asks a whole lot of its populace as they try to shift the burden of out-of-control illegal immigration onto regular folks, most of whom are just trying to get by in Biden’s inflationary world.

They’re asking for a mere three months of your time:

The state Department of Labor and Economic Development said volunteers who wish to participate must commit for at least 90 days as part of the refugee support program.

"Programs like the Welcome Corps advance the Office of Global Michigan’s mission to make Michigan the home for opportunity for our immigrant, refugee and ethnic communities," said Poppy Hernandez, Global Michigan Director and Michigan’s Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer. "Expanded refugee resettlement pathways empower more Michiganders to support our state’s growing refugee population and build a more welcoming and inclusive Michigan for all."

The ask, though, is actually quite taxing, way beyond the capability of most American households:

Sponsors would be expected to support newly arrived refugees by greeting them at the airport, securing and preparing initial housing, enrolling children in school and helping adults find employment.

The migrants will come from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela, all points of origin where many have been hoping to apply for asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Now I don’t mean to be cold-hearted, but I’ve been busy raising four kids of my own, and let me tell you, between the pandemic lockdowns, soaring inflation, and trying to keep my children from being brainwashed by the woke educational system, I’ve been a little busy. While I may feel for the plight of illegal immigrants – some though not all of whom actually just want a better life – I simply don’t have the resources to take on the responsibility of their welfare in addition to providing for and protecting my own family.

Most regular Americans are in the same boat.

The problem isn’t that we aren’t a generous people – we most certainly are, and are consistently ranked as the most giving country in the world. No, the problem is that JFK’s question has now been turned on its head – instead of asking our country to do the most basic job, the country is asking its citizens to do its functions for them.

Joe Biden purposely opened our southern border, and he doesn’t care about the often sad plights of illegals who are regularly finding out that America isn’t some sort of magic nirvana. Chicago in the winter is no fun, which is why people camp out at the airport.

A record number of illegals crossed the border in December 2023, and the flow does not seem to be stemming anytime soon. Maybe it is time to start asking, what can the government do for us? Because in Joe Biden’s America, the government is failing its citizens and asking them to take on the burdens that the Founding Fathers explicitly said were the purview of the federal government:

The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence.

While we as Americans empathize with our fellow man, regardless of their immigration status, Joe Biden has done this country an incalculable disservice by opening the floodgates and basically inviting millions of illegal aliens into our country. We are not equipped to deal with it – and to demand that the average citizen take on the onus that the federal government was designed to handle just further underlines what a colossal failure Joe Biden has been as our purported commander-in-chief.
