The political party claiming that a Donald Trump election victory would mean the end of American democracy has other ideas if the result does not go their way. 

According to the latest survey by Rasmussen Reports, a majority of Democrats surveyed said they would prefer Congress to refuse to certify a Trump victory if it comes to pass:

Some Democrats in Congress have said that if Trump wins this year’s election, they will vote against certifying the election results because of Trump’s role in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riots. Do you support or oppose Democrats refusing to certify the election results if Trump wins?

Fifty-seven percent of Democratic respondents said they supported this idea, while nearly two-thirds of liberals felt the same way. However, such an idea is still opposed by the majority of likely voters, as the pollster explained: 

After the Supreme Court rejected attempts to disqualify former President Donald Trump from the ballot, a majority of Democratic voters now support another way to block Trump’s possible return to the White House.

A national telephone and online survey by Rasmussen Reports and The National Pulse finds that 35% of Likely U.S. Voters say, if Trump wins this year’s election, they would support Democrats in Congress refusing to certify the election results, including 20% who would Strongly Support such a move. 

However, a majority (55%) would oppose Congress members refusing to certify a Trump victory, including 44% who Strongly Oppose the idea. Another 10% are not sure.

As previously reported by RedState, there are discussions among certain Democrats in Congress who plan on refusing certification if Trump wins the election. 

Last month, The Atlantic published an article outlining how Democrats were preparing to do just that, or at the very least refuse to commit to doing so: 

Murray and other legal scholars say that, absent clear guidance from the Supreme Court, a Trump win could lead to a constitutional crisis in Congress. Democrats would have to choose between confirming a winner many of them believe is ineligible and defying the will of voters who elected him... If that happens, they could have the votes to prevent him from taking office.

In interviews, senior House Democrats would not commit to certifying a Trump win, saying they would do so only if the Supreme Court affirms his eligibility. But during oral arguments, liberal and conservative justices alike seemed inclined to dodge the question of his eligibility altogether and throw the decision to Congress.

Needless to say, their decision would be based on a variety of factors, including the scale of Trump's victory and the outcome of his criminal trials. What's more, their efforts would almost certainly be unsuccessful, particularly given the conservative majority on the Supreme Court.

However, such reports are a reminder of how little the left actually cares about democracy, all while claiming that this election is all about saving it. In the case of Biden's contested certification, the opposition was due to unanswered questions about election interference. 

If Democrats were to do the same with Trump, it would almost certainly be predicated on his supposed ineligibility for office over their belief he engaged in insurrection. Either way, it would at least drive a knife through the heart of the narrative that they are the party of democracy, as their name and recent rhetoric might falsely suggest.
