Dem NYC Councilman Alleges There's a Curious Pattern to Which Areas Are Getting Resources Under Mamdani

Politicians love to say they will be the guy (or gal) who represents all the people. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the same thing throughout his 2025 campaign for the highest office in the Big Apple: that he would be mayor for all the people. But at least one New York City councilman is now saying, "not so much," when it comes to where in the city that Mamdani is focusing on various improvement projects.

City Councilman Phil Wong of Queens is accusing Mamdani of playing favorites, and distributing resources for city improvement efforts in neighborhoods that voted for him. There may also be some disturbing proof of this. A 2025 election map overlaid with Mamdani's "First 100 Days" map using AI, compares voting demographics to where the various projects going on around the city are located. Some of these projects include roadwork, housing, and public transportation improvements.

The project map hints that Mamdani's choice of improvement locations closely resembles voting areas that supported him over former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the mayor's race. Wong, who is a Democrat, was not shy about what he accuses Mamdani of, stating:

“Let’s be honest, communities like mine have been paying the price for years because we refused to fall in line behind politicians like Bill de Blasio and now Zohran Mamdani. We continue to watch taxpayer dollars disproportionately flow into neighborhoods that overwhelmingly support the mayor. New Yorkers deserve a mayor who serves the entire city, not someone who treats public spending as a reward for political loyalty.”

In the borough of Queens, around seven or eight projects are going on in predominantly Mamdani voting areas, versus just one or two in Cuomo voting areas. One borough might be a coincidence. In Brooklyn, there is a project going on in the southern part of the borough, which went heavily for Cuomo. Then, there is Staten Island. It leans Republican by roughly 20 points, and, surprise, has fewer improvement projects going on than the rest of the city, and had less support for Mamdani. The highest concentration of city improvement projects can be found in North Brooklyn, Manhattan, and the Bronx. All had a high turnout for Mamdani. It seems like all you have to do is the math.

While Mamdani recently talked up the "100,000th pothole" to be filled on Staten Island, other City Council members say they are not surprised if, in fact, Mamdani is playing favorites. Vickie Paladino is a Republican City Councilwoman from Queens, and said:

“It’s not a surprise that these projects are in areas that voted heavily for Zohran. A lot of what he promised during the campaign revolved around public transit, low-income housing, and street redesigns for bike lanes. Frankly, districts like mine have very little interest in any of that, so as far as I’m concerned, he can keep his projects far away from us. It’s not that we don’t have infrastructure needs here — we do — but I have very little faith in this administration to follow through on anything beneficial for districts like mine.”

Republican Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella may have been the first to speak up. During a March press conference, he denounced Mamdani's handling of funds and stated, “We’re getting the short end of the stick here. They’re increasing spending on things that the people of Staten Island just don’t support.” Fossella was already critical of the Mamdani administration after Staten Island city crews were sent to Brooklyn during a heavy snowstorm earlier in 2026.

The moral of this story may just be that if you live somewhere where Mamdani did not get many votes, you might have to keep dodging those potholes.
