Coming from a place like St. Louis, where we believe that the opening day of the baseball season should be a national holiday, I totally understand those who feel the same way about Super Bowl Sunday. Whether your team is a part of it or not, it is supposed to be a celebration of American culture and watching the two best teams give their all for the championship. This year's Super Bowl got mixed reviews for a variety of reasons.
There are those of us, however, who had no interest in the game or the dueling halftime shows. So, I thought I would step up and say a few words on our behalf.
I didn’t watch a single second of anything Super Bowl related.

More people need to be like me
There are almost as many reasons people did not watch as there are football fans. For many, the political slide into leftism by the NFL in recent years has been enough to enact their own personal boycott of the game. Professional sports is a business, and the NFL is certainly entitled to run its business the way it sees fit, but I would venture a guess that many conservative football fans no longer feel like they are the target audience, and you don't have to be a student of the game to see why.
The halftime show is always a big draw as well. This year, there were competing acts. The "official" one, of which the general description seemed to be that it was a "middle finger to America," also sent a much darker message about what the powers that be actually think of average Americans. Then, there was the alternative show, put on by Turning Point USA, which sent a much different message.
So, how might people have spent their Sunday evening if they weren't watching the big game? Some, including myself, might have opted for old movies. Others, if they lived someplace where snow isn't still melting, got outside for some fresh air and enjoyed the company of other non-football people at street fairs. Those in charge of cable TV programming must have suspected that the vast majority of people not interested were women.
I’m just coming on here to say I didn’t watch a single moment of the Super Bowl I went to dinner and had a massive pork chop and don’t be bullied into forcing yourself to inhale cultural slop if you do not want to

Channel surfing proved to be "chick flick" oriented. I started off with Dirty Dancing, probably the way most women prefer to remember a young, vibrant, and healthy Patrick Swayze. Johnny Castle was every girl's summer romance. But whatever channel I had on chopped up the movie so badly that it was not watchable. I moved on to another Swayze great, Roadhouse. You might argue that there is also something in there for the guys, too, with some great fight scenes as Swayze and Sam Elliott as Dalton and Wade Garrett beat the snot out of the town bully's toadies.
I settled on Bridget Jones's Diary. I had just started dating my husband when that movie came out, so my life was not far removed from Bridget's. Bad relationships, jobs, and commiserating with my, as Bridget calls them, "urban family," were things that I could definitely relate to. Although I like to think I would have been on the ball enough to tell that scoundrel Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) to take a hike much sooner than Bridget did in favor of a much better-looking and accomplished Mark Darcy (Colin Firth).
Maybe my problem is that I didn't grow up in a football family. My dad wasn't a fan, so I never picked it up. If my husband watches, it is college football and not that often. But the biggest problem is that something that is supposed to be fun has become so politicized that your watching or not watching becomes a political statement.
I can only speak for myself, but I hope I have represented, even a little bit, those of us who found other things to do. We hope you all enjoyed your holiday.
The first Superbowl in my life that I did not watch. I found more important things to watch on YouTube. And until the NFL stops with their anti American agenda I will not watch again
