St. Louis University Disciplines Students Whose 9/11 Memorial With Israeli Flag Triggered Pro-Hamas Crowd

As the fall semester begins on college campuses around the country. The anti-Israel, pro-Hamas sentiment might not be as loud as it was immediately following the October 2023 attack on Israel by Hamas. Still, campus antisemitism continues to rear its ugly head in small pockets. Now, it seems as if the mere mention of the word "Israel" is enough to send the pro-Hamas crazies running to their safe space. This time, the university involved seems to want to make up the rules as they go along.

Nikolay Remizov and Alessandro Mattina are students at St. Louis University (SLU), one of the nation's oldest and most prestigious Catholic universities. They are facing disciplinary action, some of which could land on their permanent records for the hideous crime of...wait for it...displaying a 9/11 memorial on campus. The problem with this particular memorial is the fact that it mentions Israel.

The entire memorial includes an array of American flags, one representing all who died on 9/11 and a banner that depicts the 9/11 memorial in New York City, it also shows an American flag and an Israeli flag, both flags, of course, being triggers to the pro-Hamas crowd. The banner also displays the 9/11 memorial in Israel, which is the only memorial outside of the United States.

Aside from those displays, Remizov said of the SLU memorial,

"There was no other political intent. There was nothing about Israel and the Palestinians. It was just about the 9/11 Memorial and an American and Israeli flag. … Nothing about Palestine, and Gaza, et cetera.”

But this was more than enough for the anti-Israel lefties to report the display to the university administration, which allowed them to have a temper tantrum. In an extra snarky bonus, the student newspaper published an anti-Isreal op-ed that, in one paragraph, put Israel in quotes in an attempt to delegitimize its existence and dropped a perfunctory f-bomb, edgy. Another beef of the op-ed's author was the phrase "Tolerance over Terrorism" on the memorial banner. Too real?

It was here that things started to get interesting. Remizov and Mattina decided to take down the memorial, but not before getting letters from the university administration, one saying that Remizov had violated the student code of conduct. Remizov then phoned the author of the letter, who said that he had violated a rule against touching the physical infrastructure of the university. He consulted with an attorney, who stated there is no such rule.

Remizov and Mattina have been invited to a "mandatory" hearing to discuss any disciplinary measures. A letter addressed to Mattina said the hearing would be “Based on the information available at the time of our hearing, a determination of responsibility may be made." But it appears that as discussions over any disciplinary actions continue, the rules Remizov and Mattina's display violated keep changing.

But could the real reason SLU has an issue with the memorial display put up by Remizov and Mattina be that both students are members of the conservative student group Young Americans for Freedom(YAF)? SLU has had a problem with the chapter on its campus since its application as a student organization in 2023, citing concerns that the group would not fit a “niche on campus” or that it would “promote or engage” with non-conservative students. The university went on to tell the YAF applicants,

“Further, the committee was concerned about the overall inclusivity of the organization and felt like your presentation did not make it clear how you would promote or engage with individuals who do not identify as conservative."

Anti-Israel groups are apparently much more "inclusive." The end result, Remizov and Mattina could receive warnings that will be on their permanent academic records.

Remizov remarked, “People are starting to forget what terrorism is..." If we are lucky, we won't get a reminder.
