President Trump Announces a Change in Strategy for National Guard Troops in Some Blue Cities

President Trump has announced that there will be a temporary change to how his administration is deploying National Guard troops in some blue cities to shore up safety, and aid local municipalities in repatriating criminal illegal aliens as we move into 2026.

Trump shared the move in a post on Wednesday afternoon to followers of his Truth Social account.

"We are removing the National Guard from Chicago, Los Angeles, and Portland, despite the fact that CRIME has been greatly reduced by having these great Patriots in those cities," he wrote in the new post, "and ONLY by that fact. Portland, Los Angeles, and Chicago were GONE if it weren’t for the Federal Government stepping in."

"We will come back, perhaps in a much different and stronger form," he continued, "when crime begins to soar again - Only a question of time!"

"It is hard to believe that these Democrat Mayors and Governors, all of whom are greatly incompetent, would want us to leave, especially considering the great progress that has been made???" he added in conclusion.

The president's move comes in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court's recent ruling on the federal deployments, something we wrote about as the news broke on Dec. 23:

In an unsigned, per curiam order, the Supreme Court denied the federal government’s request for a stay, meaning it will not intervene at this stage to override the lower court’s ruling.

As a result, the National Guard cannot be federalized or deployed in Illinois for now under the authority cited by the administration.

...

The Court’s decision keeps a temporary restraining order in effect while the case continues in the lower courts.

My colleague Jennifer Oliver O'Connell also wrote that some Democrats, including IL's Gov. JB Pritzker, were using the ruling by the high court as an excuse to break out the party hats and bubbly far too early. That earned the leftists some pushback of their own:

With that in mind, John Yoo, attorney and former Deputy Assistant Attorney General under the George W. Bush administration, had a possibly different interpretation of this SCOTUS decision. Yoo appeared on Fox News' America Reports and surmised that the decision may not mean what Pritzker and others think it means.

At this point, it's unknown if the White House will pull back any Guardsmen in other cities:

Trump did not say whether National Guard deployments to other cities, including Washington, D.C. — where Trump has significantly more authority over the National Guard in the nation’s capital — and New Orleans will also cease.

California's AG Rob Bonta, reacting positively in a statement to Pres. Trump's announcement, called the deployment an “unlawful overreach of executive power.” He added:

“While our rule of law remains under threat, our democratic institutions are holding. My office is not backing down — and we’re ready for whatever fights lie ahead."

From the moment Pres. Trump ordered troops to help clean up crime and secure Americans' safety across the nation, he has received major pushback from mayors and local officials, including law enforcement, and governors in some of these blue cities and states. It has drawn lawsuits, like in California. This move is unlikely to change that narrative by the Left, which is something they seem to think is useful to their political goals going into the midterms.
