NYPD Union Writes Explosive Open Letter to Officers Under Siege: "We Have No Leadership, No Direction, and No Plan"

So far, 2020 has been a raucous year for New York City’s police officers. First, they were tasked to be part of the frontline war against COVID-19, but as an NYPD union was quick to point out in April, Mayor Bill de Blasio’s own actions likely made the city the virus’ epicenter. Then in mid-May, when New York was still in the thick of trying to bend the curve, police had to deal with a shortage of PPE for their officers — along with a Health Commissioner who allegedly couldn’t care less about their safety.

As the NY Post reported, the response from that same union didn’t mince words for either Dr. Oxiris Barbot or De Blasio:

They wrote:

Truth is this b***h has blood on her hands but why should anyone be surprised the NYPD has suffered under DeBlasio since he became Mayor.

On Sunday, in another sign that the relationship between the union and De Blasio is fractured, what appeared to be the arrest records of Chiara de Blasio, de Blasio’s daughter, were included in a tweet from their account. The tweet has since been removed or deleted. Ms. De Blasio, according to a NY Post report, was arrested at a Manhattan protest Saturday, Newsweek reported.

Now, the president of that union, the NYPD (New York Police Department) Sergeants Benevolent Association, has released a searing, open letter, speaking directly to his fellow officers, who feel abandoned by the city’s leadership during the mayhem and protests following the murder of George Floyd after being pinned down by a Minneapolis police officer.

Ed Mullins began by acknowledging the tidal wave of “calls, texts, and emails” he’s received from police officers “pleading for help.” He wrote, in part, “I am very much aware of everything that is occurring in our city. I know we are losing the city. We have no leadership, no direction, and no plan. I know you are being held back and used as pawns. I understand. I am one of you! I am doing, and I will continue to do, everything I can to protect you and the people of this city. So, I am asking you to please stay together and stay strong. Hold the line and protect each other. Stand shoulder to shoulder and DO NOT give up. NEVER GIVE UP!”

Then with an echo to then-President George W. Bush’s words at Ground Zero after 9/11, Mullins wrote: “I hear you. I am aware and soon everyone is going to hear you.”

And to end his letter, in what may be an allusion to President Donald Trump’s powerful, Rose Garden speech on Monday, he wrote: “Help is coming, and we will win this war on New York City. Remember, you work for a high authority. It’s good against evil and good always wins.”

Mullins shared just the tip of the iceberg of the pleas he mentioned from NY officers at the end of the letter. Here’s hoping that the right people hear exactly what those police officers are saying.
