Jury in California: Former Church Girl Katy Perry's 'Dark Horse' is a Rip-Off of a Christian Song

When Katy Perry performed her hit “Dark Horse” at the 2014 Grammy Awards, it looked like she was casting an evil spell. Quite the turn for the daughter of a Christian minister.

But now, a court in California has decided that the song’s positively prayerful: It’s a rip-off of the Christian song “Joyful Noise.” Or of the recording, to be more accurate.

As relayed by The Hollywood Reporter, Christian rapper Marcus Grey brought the suit, claiming Katy’s Dr. Luke-produced gem took the underlying track idea from his previous work.

Among the mid-trial colorfulness: At a point, speakers intended to play the song wouldn’t work; Katy offered to just sing it for the jury. On the day Dr. Luke testified, there was a shooting outside the courtroom.

The case will now shift to the damages phase. Katy’s attorneys have requested that District Judge Christina Snyder rule that no reasonable jury would determine copyright infringement.

Back to the singer’s parents, they’ve both spoken out about her aberrant culture-contributing ways.

From Dad Keith Hudson:

“They ask how can I preach if I produce a girl who sang about kissing another girl? I was at a concert of Katy’s where there were 20,000. I’m watching this generation and they were going at it. It almost looked like church. I stood there and wept and kept on weeping and weeping. They’re loving and worshipping the wrong thing.”

Mom Mary wrote in Charisma magazine:

“Satan’s assault on our youth is relentless, and they can’t fight against it alone. Parents have to walk in their God-given authority — children can’t be left to raise themselves.”
