Billionaire Heiress Studio Head's Dad Has to Intervene to Stop Her from Making Left-Wing Propaganda

Hollywood can be a cool place (see here); but it can also be terribly, mind-numbingly lame (here, here, and a million other places).

I give you a tale of lameness:

What happens if you’re a billionaire heir who starts your own film studio?

If you’re a left-winger, you make movies nobody wants to see, losing many tens of millions of dollars.

At least, that’s what you do if you’re Megan Ellison, daughter of tech giant Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison.

Megan decided to change the world, via her Annapurna Pictures. Unfortunately, the world didn’t give a flip. Therefore, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Daddy Or(acle)bucks has installed a studio executive to keep the company from gettin’ jacked up somethin’ fierce by Baby Girl.

As stated by a source close to the situation, “[Megan] “wasn’t running a financially responsible organization.”

BOOM! Was not running a financially responsible organization!

Can you imagine having the weight of being told you weren’t running a financially responsible organization?

Oh, wait — she’s a billionaire. Nevermind.

Nonetheless, she’s stunk up the joint — her summer-of-2017 racially-inciting project Detroit cost $40 million plus marketing costs, generating only sixteen million in box office bucks. This December, she’ll release Vice, with Christian Bale as Dick Cheney. Not counting marketing, the endeavor supposedly devoured more than sixty million Big Ones. That number was a far sight above anything reasonable:

“The situation is representative of Annapurna’s problems: Much as the industry admires director Adam McKay and stars Christian Bale and Amy Adams, that number makes no sense to many observers for a film that hardly seems like a commercial bet.”

The problem isn’t purely financial; Megan’s also known to be quite the flake:

“The press-shy Ellison is also haunted by repeated complaints that she often doesn’t return phone calls or respond to emails. ‘She’s really nice when you first meet her and then — poof,’ says a filmmaker who’s had difficulty at the company, adding that Annapurna execs ‘get frozen trying to make decisions and she’s not accessible.’ One talent rep with important auteur clients says for that reason, he avoids doing business with Annapurna.”

THR indicated a current freeze on projects at the studio. Just weeks ago, Annapurna dropped its planned movie about Fox News founder Roger Ailes.

To be honest, I like some of Annapurna’s films. But those particular projects aren’t political. Why can’t liberal Hollywood keep their ideology out of their art, knowing half the audience will be put off by it? The cineplex would be a much better place.

Wouldn’t it be great to have rolls of $100 bills to put on the spindle beside your toilet? It must be for Megan Ellison. And it’s fitting, because — from the sound of it — when it comes to political messages, at least recently, she only wants to make…well, you know.
