A lot of people in Iran may be about to have a very, very bad weekend, if some reports from White House sources are accurate. Those sources are saying that President Trump may be planning a significant escalation in the war on Iran, wherein the United States and Israel may target Iranian energy infrastructure.
The United States and Israel are planning what would be one of the harshest bombing campaigns to date against energy infrastructure targets in Iran, multiple sources told CBS News, with strikes possible throughout the weekend.
There was some discussion about trying to conclude by the time financial markets open Monday because of concern about how the bombings will affect the U.S. and global economy, but an end point wasn't locked in.
The Israelis have been notified and are coordinating with the United States, according to multiple U.S. sources. The president has yet to give the final 'go' orders for the strikes, the sources said.
This would be the first time Israel was involved in direct strikes in Iran in some time. That's an interesting development, to say the least. But, as is so often the case, there's a catch; Israel doesn't seem to have been included in the planning or discussion.
An Israeli official told CBS News: "Israel is unaware of a decision to restart full military operations, nor has been requested of Israel to join any military actions against Iran."
Of course, if Israel had been included in any such planning, it's hardly in their best interests to reveal that to the media, much less the American legacy media. If there's one thing Israel knows how to do, it's to keep a secret.
An Axios story has what is purported to be Iran's response to the possibility of more American strikes.
The other side: Tasnim news agency, which is affiliated with Iran's Revolutionary Guards, quoted a senior security official saying that U.S. strikes on Iranian infrastructure targets would be "an act of madness."
- "We have prepared a broad response plan that includes strikes against the Zionist regime's critical infrastructure and U.S. energy infrastructure in the region, and we are fully prepared to carry it out," the Iranian security official told Tasnim.
That's a fair amount of information to absorb, and note that none of it has been officially announced yet. As of this writing, it's all from anonymous sources.
Hitting Iran's energy infrastructure, if the Trump administration and Israel do go after it, that's a big deal. Previous strikes have been aimed at political and military targets, but targeting Iran's energy infrastructure will impact the Iranian people in a way that operations to date have not. Assuming the new strikes do what's implied, they could turn off the electricity for Iran's major cities, including Tehran, if strikes are (as we presume) aimed at the grid and at generation capacity. The question then becomes, will that turn the general run of the Iranian people against the United States, or will it give them more incentive to defenestrate the mullahs and take their country back?
In other news, there are reports that Iran has struck at two commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
