With this year's midterms on the horizon, the Democrats may have some historical tailwinds - the party holding the White House, historically, has lost seats in the House of Representatives and the Senate in midterm elections. But the Republicans do have some advantages, not the least of which is that the Democratic Party is running polling approvals somewhere in between toenail fungus and earwigs.
That polling may be reflected in the relevant party's war chests. On Tuesday, we learned that the Republican National Committee (RNC) now has a rather enormous funding advantage over the Democratic National Committee (DNC) - as in, a 7-to-1 advantage.
An already massive gap between Republican National Committee and Democratic National Committee finances widened in February, according to new reports filed with the Federal Election Commission.
The RNC out-raised the DNC in February, $18.5 million to $10.3 million. And entering March, the RNC reported nearly seven times as much cash on hand, $109 million to $15.9 million.
A precautionary note is in order: Money isn't everything in political campaigns. In the 2016 presidential election, Democrat Hillary Clinton outspent Republican Donald Trump by a considerable margin, and yet we all know how that election turned out. But money is a lot, and if you're leaning into a midterm campaign season as critical as this one, having more money is better than having less money.
Here's where it gets funny:
The DNC has more outstanding debt, $17.4 million, than cash on hand, keyed to a $15 million loan the committee took out last October.
A DNC official noted that the committee was committed to deep investments in core infrastructure, especially staff, to build party capacity.
They have more debt than cash - that's known in financial terms as being "in the red," or "being completely and totally hosed." That's not where they want to be, that's not where anyone wants to be, and now they are claiming it's because they are investing in core infrastructure? How, then, do they explain the big gap in fundraising? Are Democrat donors not donating because they, too, are investing in core infrastructure?
Other national party committees focused on House and Senate races reported more comparable fundraising numbers, but the huge disparity between DNC and RNC finances could have consequences in 2026.
If that's not the understatement of the campaign cycle, then it will do until a better one comes along.

What the DNC isn't capable of doing, obviously, is engaging in a little self-examination. I'm loath to offer advice to the enemy, but just as a thought exercise, there are some things the DNC could do that are just painfully obvious:
- Stop being on the 5 side of every national 5-95 issue. Issues like letting men compete in women's sports, letting medical predators perform life-changing, irreversible "gender affirmation" treatments on minors, and throwing the national borders open to unlimited floods of unscreened, unvetted illegal immigrants.
- Stop trashing the United States abroad. We've seen too many Democrats, in and out of office, go overseas and trash our country. It's not a good look.
- Most of all: As the wonderful Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) says, "Try not to suck."
Republicans, yes, have a big advantage in fundraising and cash on hand. Let's not rest on our laurels. This is a key midterm election. A lot rides on this. The RNC and every Republican candidate should - must - run right up to Election Day as though they are twenty points behind and broke. Run like you mean it.
And what we voters must do, as I have been and will continue to say until Election Day, is to vote. Vote at all costs. Vote for the 95 of every 5-95 issue, not the 5. Vote as though the republic depends on it - because it does.
Editor’s Note: The 2026 Midterms will determine the fate of President Trump’s America First agenda. Republicans must maintain control of both chambers of Congress.
