OH's Bernie Moreno Fires Back at Sherrod Brown Over Pushing for Extension of TPS for Haitians

Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians currently in the United States as "refugees" will expire on February 3rd. That means that these Haitians, whose temporary status has expired, will be expected to leave the United States. Presumably, they will go back to Haiti, but the old closing-time admonition applies: "You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here."

A lot of these Haitians are, for some reason or another, in Ohio. Now, former Ohio Senator, Democrat Sherrod Brown, is wondering why all these Haitians should be expected to go home when their temporary status, which was given to them temporarily - did I mention it was temporary? Anyway, former Senator Brown is wondering why they should be expected to leave.

Here's the question: Why? Senator Bernie Moreno (R-OH), who whupped former Senator Brown in his last election, had this to say in response:

Senator Moreno had more to say on the topic; a story on the exchange reports:

He (Moreno) doubled down on this stance in a recent interview with Statehouse News Bureau: “Everybody always knew the date, so we shouldn’t have to surge a force in there, to forcibly deport people who knew for a long time that they have to do that on their own.”

Moreno has criticized the $110,000-per-year burden per illegal migrant on taxpayers during a Breitbart News Daily interview, asserting that such spending eclipses what the average American earns annually. In that interview, he called the Biden administration’s immigration approach “abject insanity” and emphasized that migrants should only be admitted if they contribute economically without relying on government assistance.

This shouldn't be that complicated an issue.

These Haitians were admitted under temporary status. That means "not forever." Former Sen. Brown, and I suspect this is a big part of the reason he's a former senator, seems to think that once they set foot here, they should be allowed to stay, because their home country is unpleasant.

You know what? Most of the world is pretty freaking unpleasant. That doesn't mean the United States has to take in every refugee from every third-world feces-hole on the planet.

These people knew their visas were expiring. The state of Ohio knew their visas were expiring. You can bet your bottom dollar that Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) knew their visas were expiring. Haiti is still an unpleasant place and, barring some miracle, it always will be. But they can't fix their country by running away. Let them go back, hopefully having absorbed some American lessons in the wonders of capitalism, and fix Haiti themselves.

As for any jobs they leave behind, there are Americans who will be happy to have them.
