Whatever one thinks of President Donald Trump, there's one staggeringly obvious thing, so much so that even Democrats should rightfully agree with: First Lady Melania Trump has brought to the White House a style, class, and most of all, grace that we haven't seen in decades - maybe ever. She's beautiful inside and out, seems to have endless patience (not the least with her rather mercurial husband), and has an unbreakable poise. Maybe that's her background as a model, and that certainly has contributed, but I think that it's mostly just her.
On Wednesday, the First Lady of the United States (FLOTUS) rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange, part of her tour promoting her new documentary, Melania.
First lady Melania Trump rang the New York Stock Exchange’s opening bell ahead of her soon-to-be-released documentary.
On Wednesday, Jan. 28, Melania, 55, appeared on Wall Street in front of business leaders to kick off the day's trading session. Her office described the ceremonial honor as a chance to mark an "impactful year of leadership” as first lady during the first 12 months of President Donald Trump’s second term in office.
NYSE president Lynn Martin presented the first lady with a medallion that ringers are typically given, and said that for the first time, the NYSE had made an engraved commemorative plate for Melania to congratulate her on the launch of her documentary.
Before the bell-ringing ceremony, she delivered some remarks:
While delivering brief remarks before ringing the bell, the first lady spoke about her self-titled documentary, Melania.
"Superior storytelling drives culture and in turn moves markets," she said. "In the near future, cultural influence will matter as much as economic power. Our ability to tell our stories and emotionally connect with audiences is paramount. People long to be moved."
"We need stories that inspire dreams, offer hope, tales of redemption, sad stories, love stories, and funny stories," she continued. "We want to feel human."
Being myself a storyteller above all things, I couldn't agree more.

What's more, Melania has a pretty good story to tell herself. A legal immigrant to the United States, a former supermodel, a mother, FLOTUS for two non-consecutive terms; the first FLOTUS to be a naturalized citizen; she's come a long way from her birthplace of Novo Mesto in Slovenia.
She's right about stories. We need stories that inspire people. We need stories that teach people. We need stories that make people want to strive, to achieve, to make themselves better people, to make others around us better people. We need examples, and stories, fiction, and non-fiction can provide those. The value of stories goes far beyond mere entertainment. Any story, fiction or non-fiction, should inspire an emotional, even visceral response. That's what I've tried to do in my stories, fiction and non-fiction. That's what Mrs. Trump is doing in her upcoming documentary, and yes, her example, her story, should serve as a model for any young woman in America - or anywhere - today.
Melania's film, her stories, will be released nationwide on January 30th.
