Al Green's Impeachment Fiasco: Even Fellow Dems Bail on His Trump Obsession

If anyone, out of curiosity on the matter of incurable mental health issues, wants to see a stunning example of Stage IV Trump Derangement Syndrome at its very worst, with a sufferer of that syndrome well and truly driven to madness by the ill effects of this severe mental illness, look no further than Texas Democrat (yes, there are some) Representative Al Green (TX-09). This is the guy who was thrown out of President Trump's March "Totally not a State of the Union" speech for shaking his cane and screeching incoherently at the president. Now he's suffered another blow as even his own party has left him swinging in the breeze in his latest attempt to impeach the 47th president.

Needless to say, he's probably not taking it well.

Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, moved to get a vote on two articles of impeachment Wednesday night via a privileged resolution, a mechanism allowing lawmakers to force action on a bill within two legislative days.

Republicans called for a vote to table the measure on Thursday, a move that effectively kills consideration of the bill itself when a privileged resolution is called for.

Twenty-three Democrats joined Republicans in pushing the impeachment aside. A significant number of Democrats also voted "present," including all three senior leaders — House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., Minority Whip Katherine Clark, D-Mass., and Democratic Caucus Chairman Pete Aguilar, D-Calif.

That last bit, that has to sting. Even the senior leadership - and I use the word "leadership" in the broadest possible sense - of Congressional Democrats has abandoned Al Green? They weren't the only Democrats to do so:

The final vote fell 237 to 140, with 47 "present" votes.

Among the Democrats who voted to table the measure are Reps. Tom Suozzi, D-N.Y., Josh Riley, D-N.Y., Jared Golden, D-Maine, Jimmy Panetta, D-Calif., Chrissy Houlahan, D-Pa., Maggie Goodlander, D-N.H., Sharice Davids, D-Kan., Don Davis, D-N.C., Shomari Figures, D-Ala., and others.

Seriously, there's something wrong with this guy.

Of course, Rep. Green isn't going to be in any position to keep filing endless impeachment motions much longer. The Supreme Court has approved Texas's new redistricting map, which consigns Rep. Green's 2026 election hope to the ash-heap of history; he will have to content himself to standing on a street corner and shouting at passersby after the 2026 election. He seems already well-suited for that role; the wild-eyed, spittle-flecked, cane-shaking countenance he displayed in President Trump's March speech has demonstrated Rep. Green's unfailing ability to produce a good angry rant on command.

Rep. Green will likely keep this up. He has a few months left in which to keep filing impeachment resolutions that will go nowhere. Even if - fates forfend - the Democrats regain control of the House in the midterms, Rep. Green won't be among their number in 2027. But we should not doubt that the Texas Democrat will land on his feet; there's probably a semi-regular guest spot on MS NOW he can work his way into - or perhaps a regular column in Mother Jones, or The Nation?

In any case, starting in 2027, we won't have Al Green to kick around anymore. We'll have to look for examples of Trump Derangement Syndrome in some other quarter.
