From Trump to Vance: Musk Maps Out Epic New 12-Year Efficiency Era

Elon Musk is never one to shy away from bold predictions, and now he's come up with another one. Citing the successes of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) that he once headed up, Musk has given us another sign of his renewed support for all things Trump, with the prediction that President Trump's second term will be followed by two terms of President JD Vance.

That's an interesting prediction for a couple of reasons.

Billionaire Elon Musk predicts that President Donald Trump's administration will be followed by two terms of a JD Vance presidency.

Musk placed the bet during a video appearance at a reunion of his DOGE cost-cutting team last month, saying the U.S. is at the beginning of a "great 12-year span," Politico reported Tuesday. Musk reportedly told attendees that he opted to join the event virtually because news of it was public, and he rated himself among the top assassination targets in the country, behind only Trump and Vance.

Attendees at the event had their phones placed in pouches for the duration, and they only got them back when boarding buses leaving the venue.

It would be lovely if Elon were right about this. The Democrats literally have no one to run in 2028 that wouldn't be an unmitigated disaster for the country. I know it's a cliche to point to the 2026 midterms and the 2028 presidential election as the most important elections since, perhaps, 1860. But it's true.

JD Vance would be a great president, of that there is little doubt. In many ways, he may be a better chief executive than his current boss. He adheres to most of the Trump populist policy positions, but he is more measured in demeanor, less prickly, less mercurial, more thoughtful. He is a formidable debater, as Minnesota Governor Tim Walz learned to his sorrow in the 2024 VP debate. Vice President Vance probably won that debate with that one great, photogenic smirk aimed directly at the camera — at the viewers.

History, of course, is stacked against Elon Musk's scenario. Only once since the terms of Franklin Roosevelt has a party held the White House for three consecutive terms, that being the Reagan/Bush years. Holding the Oval Office for two terms is a challenge. Three terms — or, in essence, four — now that's a real challenge, and in this, Republicans contend against Democrats so enraged, so possessed by Trump Derangement Syndrome, that they will be willing to crawl through ten miles of sewage to vote against anything and anyone Trump-related or even Trump-adjacent.

But if there's one thing we've learned since 2015, it's that Donald Trump's move into politics has overturned a lot of political norms. The rules are changing, and it's hard to guess where they may end up.

From the standpoint of Republicans, two JD Vance terms, perhaps with a Vice President Rubio or DeSantis, would be the best option. But we're not the only ones voting. It will be a lot of work and will require a lot of turnout efforts to break this historical trend.
