When the country was founded by some of the most brilliant men in human history, it was never intended to be under the rule of a ruling elite, a political caste that would have made Marie Antoinette shudder in embarrassment. If you want some examples of this "Let them eat cake" in action, take a look at some of the perks and benefits we're paying for, for our esteemed (hah) Congressmen and Senators.
Since the 2019 fiscal year, taxpayers paid about $30 million for the Office of Attending Physician, which handles medical emergencies but also offers members routine care for just $650 a year, an analysis of congressional data shows.
At least $10 million was spent on the House Childcare Center that provides staff and members below-market-rate childcare starting at $1,100 a month, data and interviews show. With Washington, D.C., having some of the highest daycare costs, the perk is popular and there is a waiting list.
Now, I have no idea what market-rate childcare is in the District of Columbia right now, but I do know that when our younger kids were little, in the Denver metro area in the mid-'90s, we were paying about a grand a month for two kids in a chain preschool/day care. That wasn't easy, and I imagine that 1) It's a lot more now, and 2) It's even more in the District. Probably several times that. And these people have an on-site daycare that costs them a small portion of one out in the economy would cost?
An in-house doctor is nice, too. I've never worked anywhere that had an in-house doc. I don't know of anyone who has. But that's not the best bit:
U.S. House staff and members also are feasting on taxpayer dollars with $30 million spent on food and beverages, and $4.1 million just on bottled water since 2019, an analysis of 3 million lines of House spending data shows.
What the heck are they eating? Truffles and caviar? Raw oysters?
And Speaker Johnson, we love you, but how much Chick-fil-A can your people eat, anyway?House leadership and the Republican conference alone spent $122,000 on Chick-fil-A over the past six years. Former U.S. Rep. Steven Palazzo, R-Miss., led individual congressional offices by ordering nearly $15,000 in chicken sandwiches and chips from the popular fast food venue, The Center Square analysis showed.
Sure, that's over six years, but that's still over $20,000 a year, just on chicken strips.
Now, I get it, Chick-fil-A is great eating. There aren't any in Alaska, sadly, but I've had it while visiting family in the lower 48, and yes, it's right good. But remember, your constituents are picking up the tab for this, Mr. Speaker. Maybe a little more gustatory reticence is in order.

I get that you don't see a lot of poor people in Congress. Most of them, let's be honest, were well-to-do before they were elected, with some notable exceptions; Speaker Johnson, for example, we are told was and is a man of modest means. But come on, folks, let's dial back the good times at taxpayer expense. Maybe, if you people had to deal with more of the same problems your constituents worry about day in and day out, like having to schlep across town to see a doc or tell your kids, "Sorry, tax bill, no Chick-fil-A this week," then you all may be a little more focused. Especially you Democrats; you people can't even keep the government open.
And, you know, that makes me wonder - during the shutdown, who's paying for the Chick-fil-A?
Then, there's this:
Samantha Carter, spokeswoman for the chief administrative officer in the House, wrote, "The CAO has no comment. Thank you." when The Center Square asked for basic information about the spending on various perks.
You don't say.
This seems appropriate.
Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
