Remember when White House Press Secretaries were an embarrassment to behold? If it wasn't Jen Psaki "circling back" until she resembled a gyroscope, it was Karine Jean-Pierre just flat-out illustrating how she seldom knew what she was talking about. Granted, these two were charged with defending the indefensible, but one would think that, in this important position, a little competence would be desired. But then, if the Biden administration was collectively characterized by any one thing, that thing would not be competence.
Oh, how things have changed. On Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, in a press briefing in which she was accompanied by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, laid a verbal barrage on the legacy media that was a glory to behold - but then, she seems to have a knack for that.

"Many of you in the media clearly missed The Art of the Deal. You clearly failed to see what President Trump is doing here. You you tried to say that the rest of the world would be moved closer to China, when in fact, we've seen the… pic.twitter.com/eY676007nW
The post (a transcript of her remarks) continues:
"You tried to say that the rest of the world would be moved closer to China, when in fact, we've seen the opposite effect. The entire world is calling the United States of America, not China, because they need our markets, they need our consumers, and they need this president in the Oval Office to talk to them."
"That's exactly why more than 75 countries have called, because the United States of America is the best place in the world to do business. And the president has shown great courage, as the Secretary just said, in choosing to retaliate against China even higher!"
In short: It's working. Here at RedState, we've been covering all the ins and outs of this tariff/trade barrier controversy, and whatever one thinks of tariffs as a concept, it sure if beginning to look like this is all going President Trump's way.

On Wednesday, as my colleague Bonchie informed us, President Trump put a 90-day hold on the reciprocal tariff scheme while simultaneously slamming China with a rate of 125 percent. That's a bold move, but President Trump doesn't seem to shy away from bold moves. In response, as of this writing, the Dow Jones is up over 6 percent, the NASDAQ is up almost 10 percent, and the S&P 500 is up almost 8 percent.
That's not making up for the drop from earlier this week, but it's moving in the right direction.
When this whole tariff issue first hit the news cycle, a lot of us were skeptical. Some still are. But to this correspondent, it's beginning to look a lot like a win. Countries are calling the White House, saying they want to make a deal. China is increasingly isolated - and they still need us more than we need them. And, no, none of us are tired of winning yet. Things could still go south; predictions are hard to make, especially about the future. But every day that goes by with more wins makes that less likely.
