Tim Walz's 2028 Presidential Ambitions Are an In-Kind Campaign Contribution to the GOP

It's funny how losing a presidential election completely unhinges some people—and by some people, I mean Democrats. Al Gore never got over his narrow loss in 2000 (and if I were Ralph Nader, I'd still be cautious about showing my face at any gathering of Florida Democrats), while Her Imperial Majesty Hillary I, Dowager-Empress of Chappaqua's 2016 loss to Donald Trump still has her stuck in that famous state that isn't just a river in Egypt.

Kamala Harris seems to have found solace in some liquid comestibles, causing her vaunted word salads to be even more tossed in her infrequent public appearances. She's still leading the polls for the 2028 Democrat presidential nomination, which should tell you how deep in the doo-doo the Democrats are.

Her former running mate, though, is starting to make noises about being the Democrat's 2028 savior. The only problem with that? He's an even worse candidate than the Queen of Word Salads.

Failed Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz has said he would “certainly consider” running for president in 2028 — despite his crushing 2024 loss with Kamala Harris.

Walz hinted at a possible run, saying he is undeterred even after being crushed at losing to President Trump in his doomed 2024 campaign with then-VP Harris.

“If I think I could offer something… I would certainly consider that,” the Minnesota governor told “the New Yorker Radio Hour” on Sunday.

Tim Walz, it seems certain, could indeed offer something. Granted, 2028 is a long way off, but what Walz could offer is another certain loss. If the Democrats went deliberately looking for a candidate who was even worse than Kamala Harris, they might find it in the leftist Minnesota governor.

Does he not remember the vice presidential debate? How JD Vance carefully, methodically - and for the most part, politely - wrecked him? Does he not remember Vance's famous fourth-wall-breaking smirk, which was contrasted in every news outlet to the Minnesota governor's hoptoad-eyed confusion?

Oh, but he thinks he might have the "skill set."

“I’m also, though, not arrogant enough to believe there’s a lot of people that can do this,” he continued.

But “if the circumstances are right” and he feels he “has the right skill set for the moment … I’ll do it,” he confirmed confidently.

Pushed for a more definitive answer, he said: “I’ll do whatever it takes.”

And here's the thing: If things run according to the usual form, and if Tim Walz did somehow convince the Democratic party that his candidacy stood any chance, he would very likely be facing JD Vance again, only this time in three presidential debates. Higher-profile debates, and more of them, against a candidate who has, during President Trump's second term, been one of the most active and engaged vice presidents in recent history.

The problem the Democrats have in 2028 is two-fold: First, they have no candidates. Walz would be a disaster. So would his former running mate. The recent wildfires have knocked the impeccably coiffed Gavin Newsom's chances into a cocked hat. Second, most of the more vocal Democrats are still insisting that the 2024 loss was due to messaging when it was, in fact, not the messaging but rather the message.

"Whatever it takes" for the Democrats to have any 2028 hopes would be for them to nominate a moderate like Joe Manchin, assuming they still have any. But let's be real: the current state of Democratic leadership won't allow that to happen. Their answer to the failure of progressivism is to progressive harder. That won't work.

A Tim Walz presidential campaign would be a huge in-kind campaign contribution to the Republican party, which is why I would say to the Minnesota governor, "Yes, Tim, run!  Please run! Please, please, please!"
