It's working, folks; it's working. The Trump administration is getting the border under control, they are repatriating illegal alien criminals and gang-bangers, and the initial numbers are in - and they are impressive. On Tuesday, the Trump White House released some numbers on illegal border crossings, and not only is their plan proving effective, but it's a huge victory for President Trump and his immigration and border security team.
According to newly released data from Customs and Border Protection (CBP), just 61,465 illegal aliens were apprehended at the southern border during the entire month of January — a 36% decline from the previous month. That number includes 29,116 apprehended along the border — the lowest since May 2020 — and 32,349 at ports of entry.
After President Trump took office, apprehensions declined even more rapidly: “From Jan. 21 through Jan. 31, the number of U.S. Border Patrol apprehensions along the southwest border dropped 85% from the same period in 2024, according to data obtained by ABC News. In the 11 days after Jan. 20, migrants apprehended at ports of entry declined by 93%.”
During the previous administration, the average number of illegal aliens encountered at the southern border in January was 141,710 — the result of dangerous policies that ferried illegal aliens directly into our communities, where they were allowed to stay indefinitely.
Those are some great numbers.
It's amazing what enforcing the law will do. The word has gotten out, obviously; literally from day one of the 47th President taking his seat back at the Resolute Desk, not only did border crossings plummet, but "migrant" caravans turned around and went home.

This is not, by the way, the behavior of someone seeking "asylum." There are legitimate reasons to seek asylum in the United States or anywhere else, for that matter. The plight of the descendants of Boer farmers in South Africa today presents a good example of people actually fleeing political persecution, up to and including murder. But most of the "asylum" seekers attempting to come across our borders are not; they are carefully coached about what to say if they are caught, but they are not intending to apply for asylum except as a last resort, or they would follow the usual form of presenting themselves at a border checkpoint in the first safe country they entered.
That's not what they are doing. That speaks volumes. And the caravans, turning around and going home, also speaks volumes; people fleeing political persecution or societal unrest don't turn around and go home because their access to their intended destination just became more difficult.
The president, the newly-minted head of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, and border czar Tom "The Hammer" Homan get that. The previous administration? Not so much. But boy, how one man with his mind made up can turn things around in a hurry.
The White House statement concludes:
Now, under President Trump, illegal border crossings are at record lows as illegal aliens are promptly arrested and sent home.
That's as it should be. That's what law enforcement is, or at least, is supposed to be doing - enforcing the law.
