Been awhile since we heard from former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. She probably didn’t want this to be the way her name popped back up.
Palin went to Washington D.C. to do an interview with a disabled veteran and allegedly it was Sacha Baron Cohen in disguise. According to People Magazine
Sarah Palin claims she was unwittingly interviewed by comedian Sacha Baron Cohen for his upcoming Showtime series, Who Is America?, after he “duped” her into believing he was a disabled U.S. veteran.
In a lengthy Facebook post on Tuesday, the former Alaska governor and Republican vice-presidential candidate wrote, “Yup — we were duped. Ya’ got me, Sacha. Feel better now? I join a long list of American public personalities who have fallen victim to the evil, exploitive, sick ‘humor’ of the British ‘comedian’ Sacha Baron Cohen, enabled and sponsored by CBS/Showtime.”
Palin said that she and one of her daughters, whom she did not name, were asked to travel across the country for the interview, where she claimed Cohen had “heavily disguised himself as a disabled US Veteran, fake wheelchair and all.”
She said she initially believed that the interview was a ” ‘legit opportunity’ to honor American Vets and contribute to a ‘legit Showtime historical documentary.’ ”
Ouch.
Cohen who is most famous for his characters Ali G and Borat is known for these types of stunts. However, posing as a disabled vet to get a mock interview might be crossing the line here.
What will be interesting to see is how all the other “comedians” on late night T.V. and the political pundits handle this. Most sat bemused at the treatment that Sarah Sanders received during the White House Correspondents Dinner. She works for Trump so anything goes.
Yet Palin has been out of the spotlight for a while, has no future political plans. So posing as a disabled veteran for a fake interview seems to be pushing the envelope too far.
Possibly, even for Washington inside-the-beltway types.
The First Amendment allows us wide latitude in these matters and I’m glad it does. However, mocking disabled veterans in this manner is just wrong.
Hopefully, CBS and Showtime will see that.
