I really had no idea that this was a thing outside of the Christoph household, but, apparently, families across the country find themselves consigned to the same fate: dealing with the dreaded "dad sneeze."
At our house, it's a regular occurrence because my husband suffers from bad seasonal allergies, and the sneezes often come in 2s and 3s and 4s, each as loud and booming as the one before it.
A lifelong sneezer myself, I've often wondered why he goes overboard on sneezing, often dramatically clutching his chest and letting loose with atomic "achoos." He's even added in a little Kung Fu-esque karate chop hand gesture when the sneezes subside.
It's a whole thing.
These things can be contained ... or can they? The New York Post health section set out get to the bottom of this strange phenomenon afflicting families everywhere.

They found ample evidence on social media that this is a pandemic-sized problem.
“I think dad sneezes were the inspiration for the atomic bomb, I definitely feel like I’m in a fallout zone. Ears ringing, confusion, praying for death, etc,” one Tiktok user wrote. Another commented: “Mine too!! It’s like the roof raises!! Almost a scream. Scare the pants off ya!”

Much like they all somehow know to dress themselves in cargo shorts and New Balance sneakers, it seems that dads realize big sneezes are all part of their DNA.
There's no hard scientific evidence of this, but there has to be a "there" there, right?
“It could be biological and evolutionary,” one dad theorized. “We probably do it to scare off unwanted beasts.”
The author's father, Timothy Beard, mused, “It probably is something very primal, like grunting. But maybe I’m sick or not feeling well and I want comfort, on a weird level.”
An expert weighed in.
“A sneeze is basically a protective reflex designed to clear irritants from the nose and upper airway,” explained Dr. Zachary Rubin, a pediatrician, allergist, immunologist and the author of “All About Allergies.”
These irritants stimulate sensory nerves in the nasal lining, which send a signal to the brainstem.
That, Rubin said, sets off a rapid-fire sequence: “A deep breath, closure of the vocal cords, contraction of the chest and abdominal muscles, followed by a forceful release of air through the nose and mouth.”
Rubin also revealed the noise level is influenced by things like "lung volume, the strength of the respiratory muscles, the anatomy of the nose, mouth and throat, and how much someone constricts or opens their airway during the sneeze."
“People can modify a sneeze to some degree, consciously or unconsciously, by changing how widely they open their mouth or how much they try to contain it,” Rubin said. “So the dramatic sneezer at the dinner table may not be biologically destined to shake the windows every time.”
So, why do so many dads go loud with their sneezes?
“Men tend to have larger lungs and airways and can generate greater respiratory pressures, so it is conceivable that this could translate into a more forceful sneeze,” Rubin said. “But I’m not aware of compelling evidence showing that men are biologically programmed to sneeze dramatically louder than women.”
A few dads weighed in:
“I just want to let it all out,” Timothy said. “I also feel that a loud sneeze is much more satisfying.”
“I feel it’s a clearing. I’ve held sneezes back in the past, and I almost blew out my brain,” Phil said. “We all do things in the privacy of our own home that we would never do in public. So what the heck? I just let it all get out of me.”
So there you have it: mega dad sneezes may not technically be a recognized medical condition, but science does at least give guys a little cover on it. The next time my husband rattles the windows and finishes with his little martial-arts flourish, I suppose I’ll have to resist the urge to accuse him of being overly dramatic.
Now, don't even get me started on man flu.
