Abigail Spanberger's Brutal Botch on Trans Bathroom Policies

We've sometimes called Abigail Spanberger "Joe Biden in heels" here on the pages of RedState. That's because the Democrat, who is currently running to be Virginia's next governor, has a tendency to hide herself away from questions that might reveal her radical, leftist agenda; like Biden in his basement circa 2020, Spanberger has stayed in her safe space instead of opening up to voters.

It turns out, however, that she's also Kamala Harris. If you missed the word salads of 2024, have we got good news for you.

Here's what went down. Nick Minock, an actual journalist who covers Virginia for the ABC affiliate in Washington, D.C., has been doggedly reporting on the insane transgender school policies of several Northern Virginia school districts, which have seen the schools go to battle against the Trump administration and its directive that students use the bathrooms and locker rooms that correspond to their biological sex. It's always politics over people with this crowd.

This Is Bonkers: Two Boys Suspended From VA School After Complaining About Girl Using Boys' Locker Room

As part of his reporting, Minock has asked the two gubernatorial candidates—Spanberger and Republican Winsome Earle-Sears—for their takes on what the school districts are doing. Earle-Sears, a devout Christian, has come out strongly against school policies that allow boys and men into girls' spaces. Spanberger, safely ensconced in her virtual basement, has refused to directly address the issue ... until Friday, when Minock finally got her to answer. Sort of. It's a mess.

Here's the transcript of the interaction:

Nick Minock: “As you know, there's a battle playing out between the Trump administration's U.S. Department of Education and five Northern Virginia school systems. The Trump administration is taking aim at their locker room and bathroom policies. They [the Trump administration] say those school systems are violating Title IX by having policies that allow students to use bathrooms and locker rooms based on their gender identity, not biological sex. So can you tell us directly, do you support biological males, who say they're women, using women's locker rooms and bathrooms and competing in women's sports?”

Abigail Spanberger: “The circumstance as this legal case plays out is really one of we've had court cases settled or judged here in Virginia in the fourth district, the former Gavin Grimm case related to bathroom usage. And in fact, the argument is the assessment is there needs to be much clearer guidance in terms of what is an executive order's binding assessment of Title IX versus what has been a decision of a court. But ultimately, the real impact here is, once again, it is the Trump administration taking dollars away from Virginia. Threatening education dollars to our public schools is an attack on Virginia's kids. It's an attack on our economy. It's an attack on Virginians. And as governor, the important thing is, as a candidate for governor, the important thing, the important priority for me is to ensure that we have the best public schools in the entire country. And the reality is, when we have a president who is coming after Virginia, our education system, whether it's K-12 or whether it is our public universities that is harmful to Virginia, our ability to educate our kids and ultimately our economy.”

Somewhere out there, Kamala Harris is cackling with pride at Abigail Spanberger's brutally botched response.

After hearing Spanberger struggle to coherently answer the question, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin remarked, "If you cannot say men should not be in bathrooms with girls, then you should not be Virginia’s governor. Abigail Spanberger’s silence is disqualifying. If you’re a parent, vote for Winsome Earle-Sears."

Incidentally, early in-person voting began in Virginia on Friday. Just as Spanberger garbled out her non-answer on an issue of supreme importance to Virginia parents, early voters streamed into early voting facilities to decide whether Earle-Sears or Spanberger will be the commonwealth's first female governor.
Early voting ends on November 1.
